1. must be able to sit short call from home
2. <$650k
3. 3000+ SF, garage, with an unfinished basement
4. good high schools
5. low crime

My guess is this place doesn't exist but if it does I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!
This may serve as a helpful tool? Choose the radius (e.g. 120miles), and choose the location. (NYC)

Radius Around a Point on a Map

Disclaimer: Not implying in any way, shape, or form that 120 miles is within a two hour commute of NYC, especially from certain quadrants.

You might want to check out southern Connecticut.

Southern CT is probably your best bet to start looking. Make sure you factor in taxes (income, real estate, sales, cars, and everything else they can find to tax) in your cost of living.

If you decide to move there, I'd recommend reading Marx to get you acquainted with the culture.

But it is pretty country.

I get 2 through 5, but can you share why being <2hrs is so important? The seniority NYC affords (odd choice of words, I know) would seem to make being 3-4 hours away worthwhile if that enhances 2 through 5. And perhaps on occasion you drive to sit short call in between home and NYC?

If you are slightly flexible on sq footage you will find what you are looking for on the south shore of long island. Check merrick, bellmore, wantagh, massapequa. All close to LGA/JFO all good high s hoops and you can find places for less than 650.....expect RE taxes to run 11-15k yr. You do pay for the schools no doubt. Not many people with zero ties move to these areas though, and mostly for that reason. Practically everyone I know here is either from here or has a spouse that is from here. Good luck. Also, the farther east you go on LI the more you get for your money. I don't know to much detail on those areas though.

Thanks for all the replies. More options than I originally thought. The big question that we will have to answer is will the extra earning potential offset the extra taxes, the distance from family, and the rectal trauma of living in such a congested area. Probably not, but good to know that it is a possibility.

Mike, also check out Western Jersey/Eastern PA along I-80. Stroudsburg area. Property taxes are much more reasonable than Ct or LI. Or bid Slc & buy my house, it's still available!

MikeF16,

In my opinion, yes, living on LI will present opportunities to afford it in the case of higher taxes, low stress commute etc. However, not having family around to dump the kids off on the drop of a dime GS, may make it difficult to take advantage of a last minute GS. It also is not as congested as you may think. Typical suburbs like anywhere else. House, yard, house, yard, etc. LI is NOT brooklyn or queens.

Also, for financial planning purposes I've gotten at least 1 GS every single month I've been here(-88FO) and sometimes more and I'm not senior enough to play the IOE game. It helps, no doubt.

LOL, I put out the feeler for your house every 2-3 weeks but the wife just ain't biting . We will never move to SLC as long as we're married. Too bad we don't have Denver!

Our situation is I hate commuting and told her I'm moving to a domicile, but since she followed me throughout my military career she can pick which one. She picked ATL which I'd prefer to avoid. My wife is from Texas so MSP, DTW, SLC, SEA, and NYC all get tossed in the trash due to the weather. However, my wife is no dummy and she sees all the green slips in NYC I miss due to my commute, so greed starts to fight with cold and maybe I've got a chance to avoid ATL. Just not sure if the cure is better than the disease .
