LOL, I put out the feeler for your house every 2-3 weeks but the wife just ain't biting
. We will never move to SLC as long as we're married. Too bad we don't have Denver!
Our situation is I hate commuting and told her I'm moving to a domicile, but since she followed me throughout my military career she can pick which one. She picked ATL which I'd prefer to avoid. My wife is from Texas so MSP, DTW, SLC, SEA, and NYC all get tossed in the trash due to the weather. However, my wife is no dummy and she sees all the green slips in NYC I miss due to my commute, so greed starts to fight with cold and maybe I've got a chance to avoid ATL. Just not sure if the cure is better than the disease

.Having lived in a northern climate, I can tell you with 100% certainty that MSP and DTW are in a far different category that SLC and SEA for winter weather.
The average low temperature from Dec - Feb is the same or WARMER in SEA than ATL. The average summer in SEA is far more tolerable than ATL.
Intellicast - Atlanta Historic Weather Averages in Georgia (30337)
Intellicast - Seattle Historic Weather Averages in Washington (98158)
Intellicast - Salt Lake City Historic Weather Averages in Utah (84116)
Intellicast - Detroit Historic Weather Averages in Michigan (48234)
Intellicast - Minneapolis Historic Weather Averages in Minnesota (55401)
Intellicast - New York Historic Weather Averages in New York (10025)
The cost of living in in other areas may outweigh the GS and quick upgrade appeal of NYC.

So many posts to respond to. I wrote a book with like 10 quotes but decided it was way too long. I think I've heard enough to determine NYC is off the list. I was pretty sure it wasn't ever on the list in the 1st place but I wasn't terribly smart on it and didn't want to just dismiss it without putting zero thought whatsoever into the domicile. I think I would really like SEA but I'd be gone almost half the time and my wife has expressed a strong dislike of the constant drizzle up there for much of the year.
My biggest beef with ATL is the heat and humidity. Probably going to live on the south side which means our school options are fairly limited, private school is not an option. North side is nice, but not nice enough to counter the traffic of the north side. Also looking at Chattanooga -- perhaps a little risky sitting SC up there, a 2+ hour drive and still have to deal with the north side traffic, and lose the option of working at the training center but gain the benefits of no state tax and a cooler and less humid home.

I just looked on great schools and the high schools were listed at a 2 and 4 respectively which would be an automatic disqualifier.
That actually sounds like a really good idea. I've heard Lake Martin is pretty nice too.

We have some family that lives there. Sorry, didn't know about the high school thing. Our kids are younger. My sister in law loves the elementary school her kids are in. It is a vibrant college town, with a neat old town/downtown area and has a very small town feel. Good luck making a decision!

What he said. If she was willing to put up with NYC winters, DTW shouldn't be a stretch. Is boating or outdoors your thing? 650k would get you a pretty ridiculous pad on a lake, within 1-2 hours of DTW.
