So this is a very unlikely scenario, but got permission from the wife to look into move to the NYC area. Neither of us have any family there nor have either of us ever lived in the NE before, but the job opportunities simply can't be beat.

Here is what I'm looking for, does it exist, and if so where?

1. must be able to sit short call from home
2. <$650k
3. 3000+ SF, garage, with an unfinished basement
4. good high schools
5. low crime

My guess is this place doesn't exist but if it does I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

Probably not, number 5 would be difficult to get at that square footage, and price. For anything halfway decent in NYC, plan $1000000 at that square footage. Outside of the city though, you could find something way more reasonable.

I only meant the NYC domicile. A nice suburban place on Long Island might work out. I actually found a few nice homes that seem to meet my criteria fairly far east on LI but not sure if I really want to live there. Don't get me wrong, Manhattan would be pretty cool but I know I won't make enough money to live there for a LONG time and I've been a suburb monkey for 44 years, I'm probably not going to change now. I know one place I wouldn't want to live, Kew Gardens . I should add one more bullet on my list

6. Not dirty

I swear everybody in KG thinks the sidewalk makes an acceptable trash receptacle. You'd think you were in the 3rd world with all the trash in the streets and sidewalks.

Long Island taxes will KILL you. There are beautiful areas of Queens where taxes are much more reasonable. Whitestone and Howard Beach come to mind. I live in another borough, so I'm not sure of house prices and what you get for that money, but very nice areas for raising a family.

Thanks. Both those areas are way too expensive for me and they both have pretty bad high schools. One is 2/10 and the other 5/10 on great schools.

Planning that upgrade already, Mike???

Have you considered Eastern PA? I think Allentown and the surrounding areas are within 2 hours of EWR.

Surprising about the schools in those areas, but what do I know? My three kids all went to Catholic school from pre-school through High School!

Don't overlook northern New Jersey. There are places in Bergen County which are beautiful with very nice houses/neighborhoods. Princeton area is a little further out but very nice as well.

You check out NY gun laws. That's a state I would never live in.
