I think most new hires are headed to NY. That horrid place will always be junior.

Oh yeah, if I am fortunate enough to get the job, I would expect NY first, but what base I want long term could effect what aircraft I try to pick at indoc, etc. What can I say, I'm a planner.

I have friends in Austin that have nonreved (buddy pass) with us several times. My limited experience thru them is that it's easier to get to NY on that one daily than it is to get to ATL. Gonna need a crash pad either way probably

Atlanta is all mainline also + a couple of direct SWA flights a day. All the other bases are RJ's or a mix of mainline/RJ's which makes them iffy. ATL has been an easy commute from Austin for the most part. The big music fests, F1 races, etc can be a pain so keep up with the dates for those.

I played video games growing up. Study the gouge for the cog test anyway!

So a poolie here. Trying to strategize and gain some tribal knowledge while waiting on a class. Currently live in Chicago and looking to stay put for the short/medium-term. Some questions come to mind:
- MSP and DTW both seem like easier/shorter commutes than ATL but would QOL be better in a larger base like NYC or ATL?
- If one were trying to get to DTW or MSP, which aircraft should one bid for in indoc?
- Anyone doing the Chicago commute? How is it to the other bases?

Thanks in advance fellas!

The one thing you can count on is ATL. Chicago had it's own terminal with 747 service at one time. MDW/ORD connections are a great advantage. In real life everything revolves around ATL. The one truth is, whatever base is popular today, maybe gone tomorrow. Thirty years ago there were seven pilot bases, only one continues to exist today...DYODD.

One of my best friends lives in SAT. He's been commuting to NY for years. MUCH prefers it to the ATL slog.

As a noob, I'm having a hard time understanding this. SAT has one direct flight a day to NY and your friend prefers that to going to ATL and having 7 mainline flights to choose from? Am I missing something?

He probably has AA and JetBlue to count on to NY as well. ATL is all Delta probably...so more options with isolation should somebody cancel one.
