The day I got hired, we had one guy not get a CJO. He crushed the test, then was a nervous wreck for the interview. Once he got flustered on a question, he never recovered. It pays to practice a time or two...

They offer him a chance to try again later?

From what I gathered, they said he could try again in a year or so...don't remember the exact details.

The one guy(military ) that didn't get it on my day said he didn't prepare any stories and that he wanted to shoot from the hip and be truthful. It's one thing to not sound rehearsed or provide canned answers, but reviewing your logs to jog your memory about old experiences is the smart thing to do.

I'm sure everyone knows this, but I would make sure you have about ten stories that you can adapt to any question. Have a few of your best days, a few of your worst, and some general crazy situations (EPs, funny stories, CRM issues, etc).

Who sounds more stiff? The guy who tries to give a briefing or a speech for the first time? Or a guy who's done the briefing a ton and knows it down cold?

Want proof? Pick a Seinfeld joke, or a Ron White joke. Google it. Watch them deliver the joke on youtube at various venues….you will notice the timing is almost EXACTLY the same. It sounds so casual, so easy…but the fact is they WORKED over and over on that joke, nailing the timing, until it SOUNDED natural. But they WORKED on it first, and they worked it quite a bit.

Want to sound relaxed, or natural? Practice. Want to sound stiff? Hope you'll **** out a good story at the interview on one of the biggest days of your life….

Its counter-intuitive, but practice makes you sound LESS canned, not more canned. Communication is a skill, and like most skills it is improved with regular practice. A good coach (ahem) is also an option.

I am not trying to sound like an informercial here, but dammit when I hear guys pass around bad gouge its irksome. Very few people walk into an interview and kill it without a lot of time, effort, thought, and preparation. Maybe you are the guy who can pull it off without doing so, but I got a couple hundred Delta data points that say practice pays off….

That is excellent advice, Albie.

There are numerous places out there that offer interview prep services for all the reasons talked about in the last few posts. It blows my mind that people come to a Delta interview without using such an asset. My $375 spent with Emerald Coast was money well spent that helped me prepare for the interview and more importantly gave me the confidence that I could indeed succeed in an interview. I have heard good things about other interview prep providers as well. At the end of the day before they gave us the yes or no decision I sat there knowing I had done everything in my power to make the day have a positive outcome. If they said no I would have no regrets. Thankfully they said yes and I have been here for a little over three months and it is a great gig!
