To some extent everything in an interview outside of bare bones minimum regulatory requirements is arbitraty to some degree. Or at least isn't a 100.00000% catch all. But that's not the point. Its about trying to get 99 point something and then seeing how many more 9's you can put after the decimal. Yes its somewhat arbitrary. But you know what? And you may not want to accept this. But it works and it works very well. No, its not 100.00000%. Nothing is. But the over all system works very well. So? Seriously. So? Instead of fighting something you have zero ability to change you could have spent the same number of pages learning about the process (and filling out your app). I believe you believe that. You have definately paid dues. No one can deny that. But you have NOT paid the dues of any given company unless and until you 100% accept what they require of their applicants, and you comply with their requirements. I know that you know that you'll never change their hearts and minds by simply resisting what they ask. As if one day they will have an epiphany and be all "oh wait, its YOU! why didn't you say so! although you only did about half of what we asked on your app, we're waiving pretty much the entire process because of the dues you've paid! when can you start?" So far so good. Actually your history is a bit off, but that's OK. It doesn't matter if you "believe" in psych tests or not. Its a requirement and your angst over it isn't going to change anything. Any. Thing. Yes and no. College, even vague degrees, used to be an element of intellectual finishing. Now the opposite is largely the case. Its where children go to extend their childhoods and where parents send their retirements to live vicariously through their children. You will find few critics of college more than me. But they require it. Period. Period. Agreed. And in most cases pilots do. The DL panel, the most critical and toughest part, is 2/3 pilots. The knowledge part is 100% pilot. The cog test is geared to pilot related things. And like it or not, and while its not perfect, it doe generally work. At least as good or better than some idiotic arbitrary "sim ride" where they throw you in a plane you've never flown before (and if you tried in real life it would be highly illegal) to prove you are such an awesome pilot. The process is for pilots by pilots and you will be judged by pilots. Well its not. Your opinion (on this) is wrong. Good. That's OK. For long distance thigns like that, its OK to approximate as long as you are honest about it. Put it in the comment section or at the very least make it clear in the interview that you don't remember the exact dates for that summer job 30 years ago. "It was between junior and senior year in HS and I'm pretty sure I started in June and quit in August, so I put the 15th of each month but could be wrong about that." But stopping at 10 because you think that should be enough isn't going to cut it. Again do your best. and list everything you can remember, and approximate dates as best you can. Get your driver record too if you can. Well you're not. Seriously. And you're definatly not if you don't: 1. Have the required degree 2. Don't fill out the entire app to THEIR satisfaction Finish your degree, finish the app, and lose that last part and you will do fine.
Gloopy, I very much appreciate your constructive criticism. And yes you are right. It's not easy to change my thinking esp after turning 40. But I can see your point regarding the entitlement, etc

So it's better i approach this with a different viewpoint and just keep plugging away. If I make it great, if I don't and I'm stuck overseas well the only good thing is maybe I can retire early.

But getting home is still my number one goal. So we shall see how things go after the degree is finished.

As for the others who like to make negative comments I'll take it with a grain of salt. I get along with just about everybody (in person, not through a keyboard!) But I can also understand your feelings after seeing my posts. Sometimes thing are hard to express through the Internet.

Man, I remember the good old days back in oh... November... when this thread was all about who got hired, and with what qualifications. Reading everybody tearing each other apart sure is a buzz-kill.

I will retire to my lurking area.

Has anyone heard if the hiring that has been approved through April has been extended?

If so at what rate?

Does contract negotiation hinder the hiring forecast?

All I've heard is the 125/mo through April.

Unofficial word is "hiring indefinitely", but you can't fund "indefinitely" so it gets approved several months at a time.

Retirements haven't kicked in, every update we see says "Network added more flying at the last minute", and there is some planned aircraft growth so I think you can plan on significant hiring in the near term.

Thanks Oberon. That's kind of what I was thinking. $$$$ drives the world and the bean counters won't officially approve long term hiring. I'd think it is way too hard to budget something like that.

From what I'm reading on these forums there should be some good recoveries on the contract concessions at all the airlines. However, does that have an effect on hiring forcasts or are they separate processes?

If I had to guess it will be 125 per month at a minimum for the rest of the year.

The latest update from Flt Ops says there are eight classes scheduled between now and Apr 20 with a plan of 55 to 65 per class. Additional classes are going to held but they haven't set the dates yet.

I like that prediction.

And if my "buy jelly donuts for all the Captains" plan works to accelerate health-related retirements, we may get even more!

The Jelly Donut plan will work, but it takes a long time. You need to get your buds together and pitch in for something that works a lot quicker, like a Hang Glider!
