There's a lot more to being in "tier 1" or whatever than exactly 4 years for the degree. 4.5 to 5 years if its a good GPA probably barely moves the needle, and is certainlly not enough to single haldedly drop someone a tier (unless everything else was marginal). They also look at the school itself as well as the major and of course GPA.
Some are trying to make it look like if one thing isn't absolutely perfect you're out before you're even in. Not even close.

Whether you intended to or not, your post came off as straight from 1960. Do what you have to do. If you think that the necessary actions to get interviews these days compromise your principles in one way or another, pick a new career. If not, play the game and keep your mouth shut.
What do you think my grandpa thought about me completing UPT with two Japanese Air Force students in a plane designed by a Japanese corporation? Times change.

Flycameron,
Did you hear that specifically from an AA recruiter?
At AA, there is no weight to a LOR until you've received the interview. It's a bit strange, but that's their process, along with a third-party.
We've had plenty of clients interviewing at AA who knew nobody.

Put that in your educational achievements. Your app might not score as high since it took you longer but when a human screener screens your app, it could help you to explain that an educational achievement was the fact that you paid your way through school and didn't have daddy's money.

I asked about this so called "electronic scoring system". The guy I talked to just smiled and shook his head. He repeated that every app is scored manually.

A semester or two at the local CC to "remediate" your GPA, and you're in, especially with a reasonable GRE.
Heck, I've seen people go back to school for a few semesters after an epically tragic undergrad GPA, and get into Med school (people & critter), Law school, Dental school, you name it.
Grad schools are croaking for anyone and everyone showing an interest in math, science and engineering. Show even the slightest hint of ability, and you're in, probably with a free ride.
