I'm very interested in this answer. I'm considering 320 then MD88 to get from NY to ATL as fast as possible.

If you bid the 320 in NYC, you're seat locked for 1 year as a new hire, and you won't be able to bid ATL88B til it's up. Fastest way would be to bid NYC88B in NYC, then bid a base transfer to ATL88B. There is no lock on bases. You could even get the transfer while still at the schoolhouse. Not sure you would be able to hold ATL320B just yet. 717B would be a consideration too.

The maddog will be the quickest way to ATL in my opinion. ATL88B will continued to be backfilled for a while. With AEs running every 30-45 days it won't take long. My bud got ATL before he gets off OE. if you don't mind putting up with the "maddog life" (it's not as bad as people make it out to be) you will spend a month in NYC tops.

*i know they are growing the 320 and eventually the 717 in ATL too, but I still think the 88 is the fastest way to get yo ATL.

agree with this. Lots of new hires in the last 12 months and their seat locks are about to expire. Some will stay put but some will move off the 88 and into something else.

If you want out of NYC the 717 is the worst choice. All the other airframes offered new hires have ATL pilots into the 12,300's or so while the jr 717b ATL guy is around 11,960.

I would think any aircraft you're awarded in training, you'll be able to hold in ATL prior to your one year seat lock coming up, so it doesn't matter (except for 717). IMO an extra month or two in NYC on the 320 while waiting on a spot to open in ATL outweighs taking the 88 because you think you may get back to ATL a little faster.

Apparently the senior people aren't leaving the ATL 717B category as some predicted, at least not on the last AE; I moved backwards 5 numbers with the posting of the latest category list.

Are new-hires getting the Surface in training and if so, is it sufficient for studying systems and everything else needed during initial?

Or should I invest in a cheap MS computer or a partition for my my Mac?

As a recent hire, I was wondering some of the same questions being asked. How long does it take to move bases. I looked at that most recent AE, and the following table (if it stays a table), are how many months it took for the most junior pilot awarded to go from indoc until their projected month for their new base.

------717--M88--320--73N--7ER
ATL---7-----2-----5----3-----5
DTW--6-----------3----12----??
MSP--------10----10----------7
SLC---------------5-----4-----6
LAX---------------------3-----4
SEA--------------------12----7 Yrs

Obviously past results are not a guarantee of future moves. However some comments. M88 is the fastest to ATL (2 months), but 73N wasn't that far behind at 3 months. The 717 is in a bit of gridlock, with most F/O's in seat lock, and those coming out of seat lock enjoying a high level of seniority and staying put. So right now it is the slowest aircraft to ATL, but that will likely improve going forward.

The fastest to DTW is the 320. If that were my goal, that is what I would take until the 717 gridlock clears. No one has successfully bid DTW 7ER on the last 3 AE's, as they reduce the 7ER numbers there.

Surprise, if you wanted to get to MSP, you were better off to take the 7ER this fall. I wouldn't count on that going forward, as the 7ER may stagnate once it gets through its big push for the peak summer flying. My guess is that the 7ER will be strong for new hires until about May, and then go cold again (last summer there were no new hires into the 7ER from May thru August).

LAX has enjoyed fast movement in the both the 73N (3 months) and 7ER (4 months).

73N was slightly better than the 320 to SLC, with 7ER not too far behind.

SEA just opened the 73N base, but the junior guy was 12 months from indoc to conversion date. The junior SEA 7ER on this AE started in Feb 2008, but he is only 350 spots senior to a January 2014 hire.
