Using sick time just to have days off is wrong. Losing premium pay is NOT a penalty. Once you are back up a credit balance equal to what you took off for being sick, you are able to get premium pay. Seems fair to me.

This is due to folks calling is sick for a 25 hour trip, opening up far 117 limits, then picking up 150% on days off. It may seem like a penalty, but if you call is sick when sick, and pick up when it's convenient, the 2 won't likely intersect. Some were using their sick banks as "pay banks" and this caused junior assignments and extensions to cover the flying, while said pilot was picking up premium flying. Other pilots suffered. If you are sick, call in sick. If you pick up flying later in the month and have to call is sick, you (as stated) will be working at straight time until you meet your sick call, but it's still more money compared to your original line and you still get 100% of your awarded line (provided you have the sick time).
If there is no better advice from personal experience to give, it's DO NOT call in sick unless you are sick. Not saying fly sick, saying don't view sick time as additional vacation or off time. You never know when you will actually need it, and when you do, it's gold.

Wish I could say I'm surprised ppl are using it to game the system. Too bad.
Here's my next question though, does that only apply to premium pay if it's picked up after the sick call and in the same pay period?
For somebody who doesn't call in sick unless it's legitimate, it would be nice to know that their accrued sick bank is going to be sufficient to cover it regardless of if they gave up days off earlier in the month or not.
As usual, Thanks for the educated response Higney

Question about travel to initial training.
Long story short where I live and work are about 8hrs apart (driving) and my current employer makes our pilots drive to weird places to start a trip sometimes. When I start class on August 8th, would I be able to get a positive space from a place other then home? Or will I have to drive back the night before and then DH to training the next day. (Told current employer that last day would be on the 6th and class starts on the 8th. 7th being a travel day.) Just to minimize the amount of days unpaid.
Thanks.

It doesn't hurt to ask but they schedule the initial travel for training from home or the airport that's closest to your home address. Just shoot them an email and explain the situation. The person who schedules travel for long term training is really good to work with and gets back to you pretty fast.
