Guess the reason it seems weird is what reasoning would the captain have to deny you a seat in the back?

Because jumpseating is at the discretion of the captain. You need permission, it’s not checking in. You ride with his/her permission regardless of where you sit. Can’t really discuss it much more than that because this site restricts jumpseat procedure discussions. Go to the ALPA website and hit the jumpseat info there. It will explain all the details.

Has anyone managed to commute while on reserve and get away with just using the 4 hotels per month?
Trying to avoid at all costs a crash pad. Any other options out there. Cheap hotels/motels are running $500/week or so.

When I went through, the guys in my class we doubled up in the hotel rooms. That helped to make them last. Then again it was only a month and a half of reserve. Not sure how long it is at your base
