Ok, rant off, sorry.

To all the new hires, if your LCA doesn’t explain these things, make sure to ask. If you don’t get any answers or still have questions, reach out to your ALPA mentor. The other advice mentioned above is all good as well. I don’t generally like to spend a lot of time in the crew room either, but when you’re new, it’s a good place to chat with and learn from others who may be on long sits or standby shifts. At least this way all those airport appreciation days become somewhat useful.
A very good thoughtful response. I would argue there is just too much to learn on the AA/Envoy operating system side plus flying the airplane in the real world in just (2) 4 day trips. Sabre alone is like learning to become a C++ programmer. Something as simple as looking at an HI6 message from yesterday requires calling a captain or asking someone in the crew room.

It’s $49.00 a month. Should be free to flight crews but of course it’s not....just another baseball bat shot between the legs at Envoy.

When I was sitting airport standby in NY, pretty much every FO I sat with had no clue about the basics of reserve. LCAs can't be responsible for explaining every aspect or reserve, but a ("Congrats you finished IOE you have three days off and on day three don't forget to proffer and confirm. On day four you will need to be in base for your reserve day....") should suffice. A majority of the FOs I have talked to got the midnight phone call.

99.9% of the 'Line CKA's' are in for the $. They don't care once they sign you off.

I remember when I was a new hire, there was zero information coming off of IOE transitioning into reserve. I'd notice quite often you would see a new name on the list, and a shiney new MA on their first day. Go figure. There was no information. Luckily my commute required me to come in the day before anyways, so I was able to get an answer in the crew room that I had JFK AM standby. Otherwise I'd also have had a MA. And before people start faulting the new hire for not asking the questions, these people just got blasted in the face for two months from the fire hose, some times you just don't know the proper questions to ask.

I agree it's not the NHs fault for not knowing the complicated unwritten rules of reserve. The reserve rules are not entirely written down in the contract and if you go off what is written down in the contract then you get bit because some where there was an arbitrator that ruled something and changed the whole meaning. Or some union rep has some side deal with the company and changed everything up.

You’ve obviously never learned to program C++. Sabre may be arcane and there may be several codes to learn to get the job done, but really, it’s not programming by any sense of the word. It’s just different. It’s not point and click, click and drag, drop down select, but if the old farts who aren’t as smart as all you millennials can figure it out I’m sure you can too.

Any good hotels near the Miami airport that are discounted for airline pilots?

I agree that Sabre is not programming in any sense of the word but I will say this:

I learned Basic, Pascal, and DOS back in the day (the latter of which I still find useful from time to time) and was so frustrated with how long it took to do simple tasks like copying a 3.5 inch floppy disk in windows when windows first came out, I gave up on computers entirely for several years. That was about 25 years ago.

25 years ago! (or was it 30? man, I'm getting old!)

Anyway, the fact that what we have to do in Sabre ISN'T "point and click, click and drag, drop down select" is pretty ridiculous for this point in time. It's not 1993 anymore after all.
