As a line check airman, I still can’t believe I see and hear these questions quite frequently. I ALWAYS take the time to explain, at the very least, the basics of reserve, proffering and bidding to new hires. I know this is technically not part of our job description, but most of us fly the line every week and we have to look out for each other. I can’t imagine sending a new hire to the line without at least making sure they now how to check their schedule, proffer, or check their reserve assignents. If your LCA doesn’t do this, that’s just awfully poor form if you ask me.
Ok, rant off, sorry.
To all the new hires, if your LCA doesn’t explain these things, make sure to ask. If you don’t get any answers or still have questions, reach out to your ALPA mentor. The other advice mentioned above is all good as well. I don’t generally like to spend a lot of time in the crew room either, but when you’re new, it’s a good place to chat with and learn from others who may be on long sits or standby shifts. At least this way all those airport appreciation days become somewhat useful.

The in base day really should happen before IOE and cover so much more than it does. Guys just don’t know what they don’t know, so don’t know what to ask. But the CPOs don’t have the staff to cover everything either. Maybe have an IOE instructor designated (and paid a couple hours) every day to cover stuff. I have no idea how many there are but they wouldn’t have to be aircraft specific so it could be spread around. Each one would only see it every so often. Some guys might be willing to do several days if they got paid and could sleep at home at night.

Just like anything else, Envoy won’t spend money to improve it if it doesn’t help their bottom line.
From what I understand, CCI is a huge step forward from days gone by.
I initially balked at QuickTrade, but it is worth every penny for the aggravation it saves. Even the recently added hotel request is great.

Actually it’s not even Envoy’s call. AAG is the ones who decides what system to use for flight/crew operating management.

PHL though... I wonder how this will impact Piedmont's recruiting efforts. PHL is all they have (for now).

I knew 2 base announcements were coming. However I was personally skeptical about Philly even though I guess on paper it makes the most sense for the flying PSA does... ORF was a given. If you look on travel planner and see the amount of flights PSA will be operating from ORF to the hubs and how much “through-flying” and funneling through PHL will be done by ORF crews by the end of the year that one was obvious.

That’s pretty wild. When I was hired at PSA a few years back it took about 6 months from initial to completion of IOE. I’ll give PSA this: all things considered they have actually done a pretty good job “rebuilding” an airline from scratch. All of the existing infrastructure had to be gutted and reworked. Like taking an old house down to the studs. And they’ve done it pretty quick too. I know it takes the right people in the right positions to make something like that happen. Makes me wonder what the heck is going on over at PDT...
