What are the chances of holding Houston out of training?
Not good, but you'll get back here likely in less than a year.
How long are new hire FO's on reserve.
It completely depends on base. My fo today just got down to Iah after about 10 months in ORD. He said he didn't mind the ORD commute and he liked how quickly he gained seniority % up there. In Houston he's bottom of the barrel.. But driving to work on reserve with our work rules is not bad at all. I did it for years.
I am 56 years old pilot living in Houston and looking to make a career change. I have been a GA pilot for 17 years with just under 1500. I always regretted not following my dream into an aviation career so in the current environment I figured I should just go for it. Thus my username.
Time is ticking away. I say go for it. ExpressJet has fantastic training, great LCA , and probably the best work rule wise contract in the RJ world.
The best case for me would be to hold Houston, on reserve or holding a line. If I can't hold Houston but am holding a line somewhere else I won't mind the commute. To be honest sitting on reserve and commuting scares me a bit.
Commuting to reserve sucks, there's no way to sugar coat it. But, it's just part of the game. Again, I bet you'll be back in IAH within a year of being on property

TYS is happening it just isn’t opened yet. Some very senior guys went there, but it’s still hard to say just how senior it’ll be. If it grows to what they’re saying it’ll grow I think you’d be able to get it within a year or so, maybe less.
LCA = line check airmen
Work rules... I’ll tell you one.... when you’re on reserve, on your last day before you go home, if they haven’t used you by 6pm you’re free to go home. Automatically, no need to call scheduling.

I can’t imagine TYS getting much bigger, so I wouldn’t expect it to be very attainable in a reasonable time for a new hire.
Based on what we know now, EWR and ORD are where new hires should expect to go.

Doesn't Republic and Mesa have IAH bases? I would say both are better airlines than XJT, I left XJT during the collapse and went to republic because life just got unbearable between rolled days off and constant complaining in the cockpit by me and everyone else, now on to a larger operation but life at XJT is very much in flux with everyone holding onto the dream of 25 new aircraft when they have parked 100's, place has been imploding for years with poor management. If you're going to have to commute there are more stable operators out there that pay a lot more, have large new aircraft being delivered, large signing bonuses and with lightning fast upgrade times. If you can drive to Dallas there are lots of options with great commuter airline. Good luck!

Also, XJT is now the second highest compensated regional behind EDV, with better healthcare and retirement.

I do agree republic is a great place to go, lower risk alternative, but without the possibility of a catching a huge hiring wave at the very beginning.
Expressjet still is a risk, but the payoff potential is significant. Let’s see how much materializes in January and to what extend this risk is put to bed.

Why would United invest in an imploding airline with poor management? SkyWest pulled the strings and put XJT in the position they are today (loss of aircraft etc.) Why doesn't United just give those 25 E175s to Republic or MESA then? The 25 E175s are confirmed, by United, to be placed at XJT. I'm sure everyone at XJT is glad you and your bad attitude are long gone.

I hope it is better, I definitely left with a bad attitude, we had 300+ aircraft and were cancelling 200 flights a day at Chicago alone when I left for lack of proper scheduling, UAL was days away from CNX our CPA for cause, that idiot pilot/President in ATL who was running the place had no clue what he was doing. They were triple booking gates in EWR that ended up having planes in the ball park with pilots on board who needed to operate the same flight that was blocking their current gate, it was a joke. I was number 1 FO at IAD getting rolled on every trip and they wanted to give us a 10% pay cut to give CRJ's a 10% raise, and both MEC's couldn't get along because they both wanted the kickbacks for PBS, clowns. Good to hear it is doing so well now. I guess the 7 years of shrinking the place has paid off, good thing we voted down the "Super Regional" name change back then!
