If you are on reserve and you are sick. Why would you burn a sick day for just over 4hrs of pay if you wouldn't get called, when you could just tell them you were sick if you did get called.....
In new, standard, pilot contracts, there is a thing where you can call CS, tell them you are sick, and if they need to use you, THEN they pull a sick day. If you wouldn't get used for your day, then no sick day gets used.
If you aren't fit to fly, you aren't fit to fly.

Thats not correct. There’s no sick days in other agreements. It’s credit based. Not day based. Pretty sure if you call in sick and are not available for a res period the appropriate credit is getting removed from your bank. That's why in the contract comparison it’s a defined number of credit for a res period sick call.

I would need to find the details, but it is something we should be aiming for in next contract, along with United's voluntary standby style where you get extra credit each day for sitting at the airport for a certain amount of time on reserve.

I should have specified, I am so used to sick days, yeah credit, days whatever it is. But point is, they dont get pulled unless you would have gotten used.

Biden railroaded the railroad workers in 2022 and that (among other things) caused Trump to win over union vote for 2024.

So yeah, it prevents burning sick time when on reserve by calling in sick and not even being used.

At AA we have “sick if needed”. You code yourself sick via the app. You “clear sick” via the app when well. If you would have been needed for an assignment when on “sick if needed,” you’ll be notified and charged sick for the 1 day (regardless of how many days the trip assignment was). Now you’re officially “sick” and will be charged sick time for each subsequent day of reserve until you “clear sick”.
So yeah, it prevents burning sick time when on reserve by calling in sick and not even being used.

With a little seniority (which was easy in NYC), a good understanding of how things worked, and some foresight, they’d end up with more time at home in Charlotte doing nothing while technically being on reserve in NYC. Of course, it all depended on having enough sick days if you did get called
I haven’t spoken to them in years, but my understanding is that with the new contract reserve rules—the bucket system—they can’t get away with it nearly as much anymore.
Still a great feature to have. I wish we had something like that..

certainly apples to oranges. But if 15,000 NYC nurses can walk out and stop working, twice in 3 years, nothing is impossible for us.
