So tell me how voluntary people on leave somehow ban the company from hiring. You seem to be confusing it with a furlough which is entirely different and provides protections, hence not meaning what you think it means.

You realize that UA reduced its schedule by 60% system wide. We are being told the cuts for May/June will be deeper. I can’t see any company offering voluntary leaves and then holding new hire classes. Everyone is in cash preservation mode and your cash comes from UA.

I don't think XJT got the memo on that. They are offering COLAs and still running very full new hire classes....for the time being!

They have the ability to teach their own ATP/CTP course if they see the need. The 175 sim across the parking lot from the training center could be used for this since they aren't training any 175 pilots these days. Regardless, the fact that they still have 5 classes scheduled is quite a bit different than "no new hire classes and COLA".

Why would a company trying to reduce staffing cost encourage people to take voluntary leaves and then turn around and hire furlough fodder? United is going to cut deeper in May and June. Both regional and legacy airlines are looking at furloughs this fall.

I’m not saying they will or won’t, but the assertion that every single person on leave has to be back on line before the company can be allowed to hire a new pilot is absurd. It takes 4-6 months from application/interview to get a pilot on line and flying, it’s not about what UA plans are in May/June, it’s about what their plan in September, October, November and beyond are.
