Ever notice that about the only people who talk up "southern hospitality"...are southeners? Southern hospitality is more something southerns love to talk up, than it is reality. I've lived in quite a few parts of the country (to include "the south"), and midwesterners are, by far, the most hospitable and friendly people I've ever met.
I agree totally, especially about people from the mid west. I was born and raised in the south (Ga). There is nowhere I would rather live than the south for many reasons but through the years I have lived enough places to realize that southern hospitality is a bunch of crap. The ones who promote the myth are usually the most two faced, calculating people you will find. They will smile at you while they stab you in the back. At least New Yorkers are direct when they tell you you are being mugged.

Southerners have been mistakenly misusing this epithet for over a century.
A "Yankee" is one who is of white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant descent. (A classic example of true "Yankee" is the Bush family.)
Not all people from up north happen to share this heritage.
Many of us are of Atlantic (UK, Ireland, Scotland, Wales), Scandinavian, Western European, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, African, Asian, etc. descent; and practice many different religions.
In fact, "Yankees" are probably the minority up north these days.
Does that clear it up for you, Jethro?
(Sorry... I couldn't resist :-)

Teddyballgame,
And you'd be wrong.
Yankees are:
Americans outside the U.S.
Northerners inside the U.S.
New Englanders north of "the line".
Vermonters inside New England (real ones--they shovel ******, not pack it)
In Vermont, Yankees live in the Northeast Kingdom
