Heard roughly the same thing.. I didn't hear about numbers, only that through roughly 2015 the training department should be kept busy... Keep 'em coming!!!

I appreciate the info but I'm very frustrated with the process. I couldn't get in this last round because I didn't have an ATP. A week after the window closed I got it. One of my internal reccs checked into it and they likely won't open the window for application updates again until spring. I guess I understand from their perspective but if it means that many people, and potentially younger people getting hired in front of me, that could make an enormous difference in the quality of the career...

Don't take this the wrong way, but there were a couple of thousand applicants who met the ATP requirement and had it before the window closed... Are you frustrated that Hawaiian closed the window before you received your ATP or that the window won't be open again for a few more months?

I could understand being frustrated with the interview process. It can be long and confusing at times. But being frustrated that you didn't meet one of their minimums in time isn't really something Hawaiian has control over.

This is life. Check the entitlement attitude at the door. There were folks that had planned a year in advance to obtain their ATP on their own dime just to position themselves for the window to open. If you are so concerned about seniority, don't bother. Most of us just want the opportunity to work there.

YGTBFK! So by your logic I should be ****ed at all the people hired on at HA without any TPIC. Please do not apply because of all the younger folks ahead of you.

one more question how are you flying a 757/767 without an ATP? probably just another silver spoon douche.

I hate to jump on the bandwagon on this but the fact that you didn't have your ATP is only one person's fault. YOURS!! If you were not ready for when the window opened up that is no one else's problem. Not the company nor the junior guy that may get hired ahead of you. Bottom line is THEY were prepared and YOU weren't. I fell short of the mins by 25 hours but I am not blaming the company, I am only patiently waiting for the next window to open and reapply. Accept Responsibility!!

SVA402 10-03-2012 01:13 PM

No, it's not by any means their fault. And I also didn't pay enough attention and stay in good enough contact with my internal reccs to know that would be an absolute requirement. It's just a bit frustrating that they only seem to accept application changes once a year which is rare for an airline doing that much hiring. But that's their process, and now I know it well. All I can do is be more prepared in the future.

BizPilot 10-04-2012 02:14 PM

For the guys that have been called for interviews what kind of hours and equipment have you been flying?

Thanks in advance.

PizzaBoy 10-04-2012 03:21 PM

EMB145 CA, 5500TT, 2500TPIC for me. That said when I interviewed there was literally a cross section of the industry. RJ guys, guys from every Major in the US, Emirates, pilots from China and Japan. Very impressive turn out.

tikicarver 10-04-2012 04:19 PM

Anyone who gets a Phase lll , could you tell us when you did Phase l/ll

bruddahgoose 10-08-2012 11:34 AM

swamp 10-08-2012 11:59 AM

I counted 12 place settings. Whether all 12 showed up? I don't know.

Working at Hawaiian seems like it would be an awesome experience. I'm not sure if I could afford the premium prices for everything on the islands though. The Yen is still very strong, so the tourists must be loving the islands lately.

SkyBird17 10-13-2012 07:29 AM

Where do Hawaiian Airlines Pilots live? Just curious if some can post where they live and if they do commute, how it is for them, schedule/days off.

Also any recommendations on a cheap descent place to stay during the interview? Thanks in advance!

There is a Best Western at the HNL airport located right across from the HA building where interviews take place.

Just curious... did you receive an invitation to interview phase 1 and 2 this month?

ThrustMonkey 10-13-2012 10:19 AM

I second the Best Western. You can walk there from the airport and you can walk to the HAL corp building from there. On the way is a Starbucks right next to the HAL building as well. Seems like everyone congregated there at one point during the day.

SkyBird17 10-13-2012 10:34 AM

Thank you guys. Yes, I did get an e-mail to interview. Can someone shed some light on the interview process or a good place for a gouge?

I also recommend the Ohana hotel which is even closer, it's literally across the street, while the Best Western is a small walk..

As for gouge, there really is none to be honest, you can't really prepare for this interview, HOWEVER here is what to expect.

Day 1 (phase I)...

-Sim check, using a micro soft desktop type sim... very difficult to fly well, but they're mainly looking for procedure and CRM...

-Employee panel.. usually two captains, one line and one from the training department, a senior FA and a dispatcher.. They will want to get to know you.. tell me about a time questions, and tell us about yourself.. why Hawaiian? etc..

-Chief Pilot panel... I had both CP's and a Manager of Flight Ops, some get just one guy, depends on their schedule... Again, non technical, get to know you... why Hawaiian, any questions? etc..

Day 2 (Phase II):

-half of the day you'll take tests... mainly IQ type tests, mental math, time distance problems and another test that's more situational based.... how would you react to certain situations... Again, some might argue you can study for it, but I say it's not possible.. these are timed tests for the most part and you either know how to do these by this late in your life or you don't.. College entrance exams might be the best place to look for example questions.

-2nd half of the day you meet with HR rep and maybe a retired Captain and do a group exercise.. this is a random exercise and changes from day to day... I'm not able to give out details as the company likes to surprise people and see how they react, but AGAIN you cannot prep for it..

BE YOUR SELF.... DONT PUT ON AN ACT, DONT LIE..

that last line is the best advise I can give..

IF of the 40+ they interview that week you do well, you'll be called back to come to Phase III which is a battery of psych tests where HONESTY is the only policy!

Phase III call back is about 10% or so of the P I/II interviewees from what I can see, but don't hold me to it.

good luck..

SkyBird17 10-13-2012 03:48 PM

Thank you CatIII. It's been a while since I interviewed. Appreciate the info.

abqpilot 10-13-2012 04:06 PM

Wow, that was great information, thanks catIII. I was fortunate to get an interview letter. I'm not to familiar with Hawaiian's schedules what are they typically like? How long is the typical interview process?

Thanks everybody.:)

CATIII 10-13-2012 04:47 PM

I was there from Sunday for a Monday phase I thru Friday, for a Thursday Phase II. It's mostly all day on those two days.

Phase III was basically a half day.

Best of luck, it's a great company with a bright future.

Hawaiian Airlines Hiring

How long after your phase 1 and 2 did you get notified of phase 3 and how much notice did they give before you had to be there?

for me it was fast, about 2 weeks... In my class it varies from 2 weeks (myself and two others) to almost 1 year... It's all a grading/scoring system that nobody really understands. As for notice, you are offered a PIII, if you can't make it, they WILL re-schedule you for the next one, but they usually don't know when it's going to be until about 1 week before... so you have to remain somewhat flexible.

bruddahgoose 10-14-2012 01:53 PM

So anybody knows when the next class is?

abqpilot 10-15-2012 11:00 AM

I'm just curious. What is a typical schedule like for the 767/ A330.
How many days make up a typical trip?

Thanks.

Two-percent 10-15-2012 05:06 PM

Hawaiian seems to interview many applicants and offer very few positions. That's a lotta dough to drop for a slim chance at a job.
Oh well, I guess you have to pay to play and play to win. I wouldn't want to be the last man hired on the island. They may have to be a little more flexible when everyone else starts hiring.

LIOG41 10-16-2012 01:33 AM

Any discounts for the hotels near the airport?

Shifty 10-16-2012 11:11 AM

How long would it take for a new hire to get SEA based? Thx

gsphuntr 10-16-2012 11:30 AM

Don't go to HAL for the SEA base...Realistically it won't be around long term - It's a 767 base and ultimately they are going away! With that said, Alaska will be hiring again soon!

+1. Can't see pushing for HA and wanting to live on the mainland.. DL, AK,UCAL..ect will be hiring very soon. Here's hoping for at least a phase 1 with my very long list of places in Hawaii I'd live on!! Been there every year since 06, I grow a little more every year I'm there!

Phase 1/2 early August. I was emailed for phase 3 2 weeks later. Turned it down. Emailed again 2 weeks later, turned it down. Emailed again a week later and told this was my last chance. Did phase 3 a couple weeks ago. Offered the job a week later. Was originally advised it would be an October 19th class, but told in the job offer email it would now be January, but always be ready cause it could be sooner.

Can't wait to start. Glad I get to make it through the holidays where I'm at now because we don't fly much. I'm guessing these will be the last holidays I see at home for a while.
