Why do people keep saying this when it is not true? It is totally possible to commute for your entire career if you want. In fact, it would make a lot more sense to commute the first couple of years because of the low starting pay, the high cost of living and the high cost of moving to the Islands for the mainland. With PBS you can ask for block days off or give up a few days off to have a line built for you.
I never thought about the travel or hotel when I applied to Hawaiian; I have a good friend there and knew he was very happy and that was enough for me. I honestly didnt think of those things either when I applied too. As I said above I'm good friends with folks there and have nothing but great things to say about the airline and have interacted with crews and all love the company. So why not join a family that is happy with who they work for?? |

Yes but only 200 were called for interviews. Once you actually get in the door the odds seem to improve!

Hawaiian is sort of the Fedex of passenger jobs these days... seems like they've got the pick of whom they want and they seem to (fairly or not) prefer locals.. I for one think it's a mistake to focus on locals since you should be hiring the absolute best you can get, quality, personality and everything else... a pilot knows and understands what's involved in commuting and relocation and many have already weighted and planned what they'd do if they're throwing in their app.... but that's just me, I'm not Hawaiian and I don't pretend to know what's best for them better than they do... just my .02$

I never thought about the travel or hotel when I applied to Hawaiian; I have a good friend there and knew he was very happy and that was enough for me. To all who apply: we use pref bidding; junior pilots will NOT find their schedule easly commutable! If you're assigned the 717 it would be nearly impossible. If you're on a widebody, it will be difficult at best. Please don't listen to people who don't know what they're talking about. You won't be happy with your lifestyle when you find commuting is not really plausable. Don't make career decisions based on misinformation! You may be able to live in a crash pad for a few years, and IF the company grows and your seniority position improves, ultimately you might have other alternatives. But you would be making a mistake to think that you'll be happy commuting with a junior schedule in your first few years. Bottom line: if Hawaiian represents the right opportunity for you, plan to move to Hawaii...enjoy the islands and their special culture! Grow personally and professionally....the rest will follow! |

Okay first off, I love how people in this forum always take just one part of a post and focus just on that. Of course that’s not the only reason!! If you read my post and a few of the others you would see a few reasons that could be contributing to Hawaiian not flying interviewees out. There are possibly numerous other reasons as well.
Seriously think about it though, how many more applications would Hawaiian get if they offered people stby tickets and a hotel to stay in for two days?!?! I know a few people off hand that would apply even though they would have no intention of accepting the job if they were offered one. The cost of living is very high and commuting is practically non-existent for the first few years. So you can see why Hawaiian is being very selective and only want to choose from a group that are really dedicated on flying for them and worth spending the thousands of dollars for training costs. Anyway, I don't buy it for a second. So what about how selective they can be? So what about the cost of living? Neither even implies that a reason that they don't provide transport and accommodations is because of this worldwide interview/vacation scammer conspiracy:rolleyes:. |

So now to try to get the thread back on topic......I'm still in the pre phase 3 holding patter, how is everyone else doing? |
Have there been any Phase l/ll interviews lately?

It is indeed their prerogative to not provide travel to and from, but I doubt that this why. I agree. Sorry to continue the tangent. As for the commuting questions, lemme tell you what the most junior A330 FO's got for september: looks like one bid max cred. and took fewer days off (10), got 6 LAS 3 day's worth 11:45 each and a Haneda 3 day worth 15:40 = 86:10 another bid min cred and got 13 days off, 4 LAS 3 days (one goes into Oct.), 2 LAX 2-days worth like 11 hrs, and a SAN 3 day for 12 = 75 hrs. the LAX show time was 0700, LAS 1400 (release 0515) or 2130, Haneda 1805, SAN 1335. all besides that LAS @ 0515 got released around 12 or 1300 in HNL. So, you could probably catch mid day flights back to mainland after your trips, but not likely to commute in the same day (which I wouldn't want to do anyway). sorry if that was confusing. |

Reserve is not always junior at Hawaiian the way it is at other carriers.
|
I looked at the PBS award, and I didn't see any reserve! Idk if it's normally in a different place or they're short, but I do know that you can bid 18 on, 12 off if you're on wide-body reserve (and get your 24 in 7 on the road). As for getting a string of days with a line, that is a matter of - PBS/seniority/current needs - magic. Ya know? Depends what people above you want, if there's reserve and how many, etc. They can put a destination that has been on the 767 on the Airbus next month and totally change the dynamic.
|
pretty sure the lack of reserve is cause they're short - and people are coming out of training, and maybe there was one or two senior reserves that I didn't see while scanning the award . . .
|
. . . but people definitely bid for stretches of days off and get it. Best way to get that off the bat though is to bid reserve I think. Hiring so many right now that it is changing drastically . . . all three types equally likely for new-hires.

Don't sweat it. I had to reschedule both my Phase I/II and Phase III interviews due to working out of the country. They didn't have a problem and got me into the next group both times without any trouble.
|
I was offered phase I and II also on Aug 8th 9th and could not attend. I was offered the 11th and 13th this month also.
but I had to turn down both, I hope I can get in on the next one if its in Oct. |

So far just about halfway through the 95 or so needed for this opening.... Rumor from 2 friends already flying the line is maybe another vacancy bid coming out in a few weeks that may include an additional 30 or so??? Seems to be slots for all 3 a/c.. From the looks of it lots of movement between a/c. |
