Hmmm........I'm thinking they might start changing their word to make it sound more doom and gloom than it is (not saying burning cash is not bad, just that they will make it sound crazier). Reason why I say this is becuz I was in recurrent recently and the system chief was very positive about our near future. Eg. He said we'll need all the 190s back in service for the codeshare. Also asked him if he thinks this summer will be much much greater than last summer and he said yes. And last summer we peaked out at about 60%. It was a pretty positive atmosphere.

We were no where near 60%. We ran about 60% sched at best at around 50-60 % LF. Overall thats about 30-40 % of normal footfall.

Optimism is healthy, but you guys are delusional if you think things are looking good for the rest of the year.

BOS business traffic.... nil.
NYC.... still shut down.
California..... under increased restrictions.
International.... Covid test now required for US citizens to re-enter.

That's almost all of our business right there. If it weren't for Florida we would already be toast. Based on those factors alone I expect us to regress quite significantly until three out of four of those things change. I don't fly much, haven't read a company email in over a month, haven't talked to chiefs or anyone in the know. This is just what I see from watching the news and having a bit of knowledge about our network.

Flame away.

I agree 100% with you. Haven’t heard or seen a single thing that makes me thing anything has changed for the better. Just a few months ago we were talking about how the vaccine will drive demand back. Summer will be prosperous. Now the vaccine is here. Nothings changed. There is now a new variant that is more deadly and the vaccine is apparently not as effective towards it.

But spirit and frontier are hiring. So all must be good

No meaningful percentage of the population has been vaccinated yet. Frontline healthcare workers and those in long term healthcare facilities. Those demographics don't constitute a huge percentage of the traveling public. We need to get into the Summer months to start getting to families and the broader general public before we see major improvements.

Fair point. However the roll out of the vaccine has not gone to whatever plan they had (if any plan) much slower than apparently anticipated. Biden is looking to do 100m in his first 100 days. Hopefully that comes to fruition.

Last week we averaged over 1.1million shots per day, so the pace is picking up. Not sure how the next month or so will look if supply gets limited. I think once J&J’s vaccine gets emergency approval, that Biden’s 100m/100 days goal is kind of weak. 1 million shots/day with J&J’s one shot vaccine, and three vaccines total, should be the floor of what they strive for.

Really are you that unaware that we are already at that rate?

Of course I could see the confusion when our new transparent ministry of truth points out that under Trump we averaged 500,000 doses per day. Yeah I’m looking at Psaki. So truthful yet so missing the mark. The number we want to know is where we’re at , not that average since day 1.

You all can bicker about the true number of daily vaccinations and get into a left/right political argument all you want, but you do realize none of that matters if these restrictions remain in place, right? Vaccination numbers are irrelevant while travel restrictions are in place.

Business travel isn't going to come back quickly, and people don't want to spend on leisure travel if there are too many uncertainties or too few options. Taking a Covid test to go to Hawaii or Aruba is too much of a barrier for some people. Now you have to take one to get on a flight back home, and if you test positive... then what?

Ok

Scenario 1 has high vaccination rate. In a few months Covid cases reduce substantially and restrictions begin to lift.

Scenario 2 we continue on our current trajectory of peaks and lulls. Stressed health care facilities in certain areas, politicians using restrictions etc.

Scenario 1 is our way out of it. And we should be hoping for a successful vaccination program. Restrictions get lifted as cases go down. Schools reopen, people start going back to work, people feel ok about being on planes when they’re vaccinated.
