I put this on another thread a month or two ago, but I'll repost it here.
My conversation with an APD I know well went something like this:
Me - "What's new in the training department?"
Him - "Ugly - REAL ugly."
Me - "Why's that?
Him - "Mesa has been hiring retirees from other airlines as instructors. They're signing off pilots to take their checkrides who aren't even close to being ready, so I'm failing nearly half of the students because of this. I feel bad - I mean, I feel terrible about it because I know it stays on their record forever. But once the checkride has started, I have no other choice. Even though I know why they're sub-par, I can't send them back for more training without unsat-ing them first. It really sucks. I can tell within the first few minutes of the checkride if they weren't trained by a Mesa instructor."
I'm paraphrasing, but that's almost verbatim what I was told. It was pretty recent. This is pathetic - no airline should ever put their pilots in this situation. Just another day at Mesa.

Cause we can’t staff the flying we have. Typical short sighted reactive company as always. If they improved training really using line pilots then they would net MORE pilots not less. We are down Pilots in all areas month over month.

APDs and sim proficiency check pilots both require line pilot qualification. In fact, any check pilot does. Also, a seat filler must be line seat qualified, as well as instructors for upgrade.
So, everyone can’t be sent back to the line. And, a pilot only becomes qualified as a check pilot by being an instructor. So, your CRJ instructor is blowing it out his ass.

Flight Safety won’t allow that. Some contract instructors don’t have medicals, having lost it for diabetes or some other medical condition. I don’t know why others won’t qualify to fly the line, except with the possibility they don’t want their summers and holidays ruined when they are forced back to the line.

Otherwise, the APD - whom I know and trust - wouldn't have told me this. It's possible that these instructors are no longer there now, but not likely - given Mesa's obvious need for instructors. I noticed a week or so ago that the Mesa sim instructor position was still posted on indeed.com - offering the 20K as a signing bonus.
I was also told by an APD that Mesa could lose it's agreement with the FAA to do AQP (rather than the traditional PC's). I was told the FAA is not happy with Mesa's training dept.
Who could blame them?

CRJ or EJet
I have been offered a job at Mesa on the CRJ.
I am actually rated on the EJet with about 2000 on type from another carrier and was wondering what is better to fly and offers a better setup regarding bases and schedules.
I was living in PHX before and am returning to the US and I want to live in PHX again however am open to considering IAH.
As it stands I would bid for PHX now and hopefully get it as I dont want to commute.
The E-Jet was nice to fly and wondering if the CRJ900 is an enjoyable experience as well.

It is really up to you. I fly with pilots who like the CRJ better and I fly with pilots who like the autothrottles better.
