Mesa's contract has a whole lot of room for improvement, and if JO claims he can't afford to increase your pay and benefits that's his problem, not yours. I can't think of too many outfits that have lower pay and benefits than Mesa, so don't be so afraid to demand improvements!!
1) We're filling classes

2) We're getting new airplanes and securing more flying

3) The chances of the NMB releasing any pilot group to strike is roughly the same as winning a state lottery (thanks, RLA!)

4) People show up to work everyday, and our performance numbers are solid

5) Individual ALPA carriers are allowed to blatantly undercut other ALPA carriers to get more flying, with the blessing of ALPA national (PSA)

Please explain to me why any CEO who wasn't COMPLETELY out of his mind would give us a single penny more than what we're paid now. Explain to me what exactly MAG ALPA could ever hope to do to change his mind when the above 5 points are true. I'm all ears--convince me why exactly JO would give us a raise.

Maybe your pilot group needs stop busting *** for JO, since it's very obvious he doesn't give a crap about any of you... Stop encouraging people to work for him, if he can't crew his planes, he might actually have to increase pay and benefits to keep the metal moving. Pretty much all the regionals have been hiring, the vast majority have higher pay and benefits, why work for him at all?

It's simple math/microeconomics. Every species on Earth attempts to maximize his or her resources according to perceived probabilities. When a pilot with a wet ATP gets a call from Mesa, whether they know it or not, their brain considers the following:

(Perceived years of service as FO x average FO payrate for those years)

+

(Perceived years of service as CA x average CA payrate for those years)

+

(Perceived probability of achieving legacy/dream job x perceived liftetime earnings at that job after # of years at Mesa)

+

Normative/non-quantitative factors such as domiciles, SJS, and short-term incentives such as ease of interview process, training in PHX instead of somewhere terrible, etc..

The reason we are filling classes is obvious and very, very simple if you view it cynically from the perspective of a behavioral economist--we are still filling classes b/c the above equation results in a picture that seems rosier to our new hires relative to the picture they see at other regionals/flying jobs.

On the other hand, when higher-paying regionals vote down concessionary contracts, the same principles apply--a majority of pilots on property are simply acting in their best interests: a majority of pilots on property have decided they'd rather take the odds of losing their job (at their seniority level), rather than take a paycut.

We can sit here and try to explain our career decisions in emotional/moral terms, and fight each other rhetorically all day long, but it's all just simple math at the end of the day, and we're just trying to apply words/meaning to something that's all just cold hard subconscious logic.

There have been quite a few FOs hired recently who live in PHX or within reasonable driving distance. Most view the regionals as a stepping stone to something better, so why choose another regional where you have to commute? Unless the company has a large fleet of 50 seaters with no replacement plan, why not go where you can live in base?

When you were in high school did you drive two hours to work at mcdonalds or did you work at the fast food joint a few blocks from your house?

What you really should be asking is why almost half of the next class is filled with guys from other regionals.

I'm in the OCT 15 class for the Ejet and I'm asking myself that question. Why am I taking a pay cut and going to have to commute to work instead of staying with the company I am with now and driving to work. why oh why?
