I'm guessing this all got started by someone reading the AF Times issue that had the big article about paying people to get out and paying people to stay in. I waited around for the FY 08 VSP announcement and was disappointed as an 11M to not be eligible. I'm still getting out... most likely. I should get orders this Summer for a Fall assignment.

Anyone remember when the VSP announcement was made last year? I'm thinking about asking my commander to ask my assignment manager to hold off for one more cycle to see if VSP is for me this year.

Just be careful not to show your cards unless you've really decided that you are getting out. My base had some issues with school slots being pulled and some other baffonery when leadership found out some of the "shooting stars" were planning on punching.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I feel that pain... My CC "de-stratified" me on my OPR recently when I told him that I'm planning on punching in early 09.

If they bring back VSP for 09, that would be amazing. I'm thinking though, (and big brother Air Force isn't this smart...) but if the USAF wants to chop down more of the 11m's from 09, all they really need to do is not offer a pilot bonus. I'd obviously be loving life if they would give VSP, i.e. pay me to do what I was going to do anyway. But I know a lot of guys who aren't staying in unless there is a bonus... I think AFPC is going to crap themselves next year when they open the flood gates.

I wish it were true but I just don't think it will happen. After the demoralizing brief at this last years ATA and the front page of AF Times calling for a serious halt and actually increasing the numbers in the AF - I'm afraid we are out of luck. Dropping my papers early '09, but telling my leadership that I'm trying to be Chief of Staff. That's how you play it!

"my fingers are crossed... for once, I'd just love to have the option to choose."

You're more than free to choose - once you commitment is up or the drawdown continues and some folks luck out and get paid to punch either way at some point the choice will be yours. As far as punching out, I did it and never looked back, things have worked out and when I run into those that stayed it seems I'm smiling a lot more than they are. On the other hand, maybe they'll start grinning once that AD retirement check starts flowing in while I wait till age 60. Either way - enjoy the ride and try to have fun while doing it - remember as much as we complain, there are 1000's out there who would want to trade places with you in a heartbeat.

just my 2 cents

I was just checking the AFPC website the other day... it looks like 11M's for 09 only have an overage of "2" spots. I wouldn't count on VSP for 11M's for 09. If anything (and I'm not sure if it's been announced yet or not) I'd bet on the bonus for 09; for those willing to stick it out another 10 years...

It's actually rather ironic... 2 years ago, they were paying dudes 80K plus to get out (when they were willing to leave for free), and now they are probably going to offer a bonus to keep dudes in. My hats off to all the VSP'rs who were able to cash in, what a great deal

Have 11F's ever been eligible for VSP?
