For every PSA/PDT pilot that mainline hires a total of 3 US Airways family pilots need to be trained:
1. Former PSA/PDT pilot trained at mainline.
2. Former PSA/PDT F/O trained to replace pilot #1 above.
3. New hire PSA/PDT pilot trained as FO to replace pilot #2 (above).
However if you hire non PSA/PDT pilot Airways only has to train 1 pilot, which is much cheaper.

1. US hires pilot from EV/CP/MQ/etc (training event)
2. PDT/PSA pilot leaves for B6/UA/WN/etc (training event)
3. PDT/PSA hires new pilot. (training event)
If management uses reasoning like this (and they do), no wonder this industry has lost so much money in its history.

The above logic collapses when Airways is not the only carrier hiring.
1. US hires pilot from EV/CP/MQ/etc (training event)
2. PDT/PSA pilot leaves for B6/UA/WN/etc (training event)
3. PDT/PSA hires new pilot. (training event)

Tonight on Discovery Chanel they had a show called Worlds most Dangerous Airports and one of them was about PSA flight 182 and the mid air collision. Cool show but I liked seeing the stuff on the old PSA.
I once was on a US Airways jumpseat and when I introduced myself I said I was with PSA and the other jump said he was too... the original.

I agree with full flank. Why would they hire one of us when they can take from their competitors, however short? The other question that remains is will they hire from Eagle at this point?

Because getting rid of a $100,000/year regional captain would save them money. Do the math or read the posts on the previous page. yeesh.

100k is a high estimate. All the guys I know leaving are around 8 year seniority and didnt make 100k. You would need some serious open time for that, but ill let you run with that. So you get rid of 100k guy and replace with a newly upgraded 70k guy. Thats a saving of 30k over a year. It will cost them at least that much to train you, thus breaking even long before a full year. Now, you need to be replaced at psa. Ugrade an fo (cost). Hire a new fo (cost).

A five year CA isnt making 70k on reserve either.... And a new hire FO is lucky to break 23k...... Not the 45k plus the 5+ year fo is......
Upgrade cost=sim only..... Not really much cost minus IOE CK pay.......
I really think the conspiracy theorist out there are funny.... The company is planning 30% attrition.... Been told to everyone that's their training estimate.... So if no one else is hiring where do you think they're estimating most go? USairways seems like their thought.....

Currently (yes all figures are approx)
Captain $100,000
F/o $40,000
New mainline f/o $35,000
Total $175,000
New upgrade captain. $60,000
New regional f/o $25,000
New mainline f/o $35,000
Total $120,000
Difference is $55k left over for training.
The savings would be in year 2.
Captain $75,000
F/o $30,000
Mainline f/o $40,000
Total $145,000
Second year savings are at least $30,000.
The trick is to get rid of the expensive regional captains. Or end up like comair and the soon to be dead pinnacle.
