If at all possible, you should drive. It's well worth it to be able go eat at at a different restaurant, go do laundry, and not have to constantly be worried about hitching a ride or waiting on the shuttle.

In CLT, you can get away with no car. There's a Chili's, a Denny's, Subway and a McD's all within walking distance. In addition, there's a Sonny's BBQ...but their service is lousy. There's also a Japanese place, but never tried it. Other hotel gusts warned me away from it. There's also a convenience store across from McD's.
If you're staying for a couple of weeks, there's a COSTCO nearby. The hotel staff is very helpful and will take you anywhere you need to go.

If you can afford to bring your car, do so. There is a lot of cool stuff to do in and around Erlanger and Cincinnati if you have wheels. Otherwise you'll be stuck walking to Subway and Rally's.
During ground school you can walk to everything if you're staying at the Fairfield Inn. Although it is nice to not be held hostage by the hotel shuttle to and from the training center.
My two cents.

Do you think it would make more sense to just rent a cheap compact on the weekends? Meaning not much getting out is going to be done M-Thurs. Just doing a quick priceline check weekend rates are about $15/day, maybe split that cost with a few someones.

The instructors stay at the Clarion with the Flight Attendant students. There is very little near the Clarion except for Skyline Chili.
The new hire pilots stay at the Fairfield Inn. There are more than 20 restaurants and bars within a very short walk, and the shuttle will take you anywhere else you would need to go.
There is a WalMart across the street, as well as a place to get haircuts and just about anything else you would need. A car is fun to have, but not a necessity for students.
