That will do. I don't mind using ship sets. I got in the habit at XJT and just carried wipes around with me. I flew with a few who used non TSO headsets and would just throw the ship sets on if an inspector got on.

You married to a Doc or something? You certainly aint making that kind of scratch at PSA.
I'm also taxed at 39.6% for every dollar I earn at PSA that isn't tax deferred, so the smaller my W-2 income is, the better.
Eh, you really need to learn how marginal tax rates work. Bottom line, being in a higher tax bracket determines how much the next dollar you earn is taxed, not all the dollars you earn. From a strictly tax rate perspective, there's no reason to try and earn less money to pay less taxes.

Don't confuse marginal tax rats and your effective tax rate. Very different things.

Two quick questions:

1. Received an email about the CTP course saying, "You will be transported to Cincinnati Muncipal-Lunken Airport to take the written test on December 15 or December 16". Is this to take the actual ATP written, or is this the end-of-course test for the CTP portion, and we're responsible for setting-up the ATP written on our own?

2. Does anyone have any gouge on training dates for the holiday period? Class start date is the 19th, so I'll obviously be in training for Xmas and New Year's... I understand we get those holidays off, but since they both fall on the weekend this year, would anyone have a clue how that works out? Not a big deal really, just trying to figure out how much time I'll have to pack up the family and divy-up trips between all the different family members, if any...

Thanks

Email those questions to [email protected].

I know the instructors will want to take a few days off for Christmas, and in the past, people in training got 4 days off. I don't think anyone outside of the training department know the exact plans this year.

If the letter says that you will be going to Lunkin, which is a FAA testing center, to take the ATP written, then I would assume that it is the FAA ATP written exam.

Okay, I'll do that...

And it doesn't actually say we're going to Lunkin to take the ATP written; it just says "the written test". I kind of assume that is what it is, but as you may know, there's a written test at the end of the CTP course as well, so I just wanted to be sure.

The end of course test is given in Dayton before you do the sim sessions. The "written" test mentioned there is the actual FAA written exam which must be taken at a designated testing center. For your convenience they will transport you to the one at Lunkin, but you can go to any testing center in the country to take it if you so desire.

PSA, and flying professionally, is more a hobby for me now than a career. I've worked very hard over the last 15 years to make having a job irrelevant.

Yes, every w-2 dollar I earn at PSA is taxed at 39.6%, because if I didn't earn it, I'd still be paying 39.6% on the "last dollar earned". It is absolutely in my interest to reduce my w-2 income by maxing the 401(k) contribution. It's not about earning less - it's about retaining and growing more of what little I earn flying airplanes.

This isn't intended to sound like a **** measuring contest, because I'm not better than anyone here, and I fly with a lot of people who are ambitious, capable, very intelligent, and hard-working. I've struggled years ago as a $20k/yr. First Officer with no other source of income.

I've long advocated for pilots to leverage their talents to make income earned from flying irrelevant. This career is too unstable not to attempt to do so, and pilots who are waiting for the next paycheck to hit their bank accounts are the best employee airline management could ever hope for when it comes time for contract negotiations, or bankruptcy concession negotiations.

There's a shift in the way one's brain works once investment income exceeds the money one gets after they scribble their name on the back of a pay check.
