Im pretty sure my trip cancelled yesterday because they couldnt find a captain to do it......... nice!!!! i was lurking on a bunch of captains lines,and man they are REALLY abusing them.... I didnt see any that didnt have a JM or DS on their line..

EVERYtime I sit ready reserve it is alone, with no captain! EVERY SINGLE TIME. I think it was like 3 months ago I actually had a captain sitting ready also... last night 2 Fo's 2 Fa's no captains yayyyy

As far as planning, or crew forecasting, is concerned, there is no "practical" application over there. They are sitting in a cubicle in the G.O. looking at a spreadsheet, with no idea as to what is actually happening out on line. If it looks good on paper to them, then it is working.
A captain I flew with recently questioned one of the flight contrllers in the SOC about aircraft swaps at outstations; he was told that "he didn't see the big picture". He promptly replied, "I'm flying the big picture and it ain't working".

Here's a tasty tidbit I learned yesterday. Most of the block hours cut are going to be out of everyones fav base JFK! DL wants to cut RJ flights in and out of JFK before the Feds cut them. There will be a cut down to two pushes. There will be an A.M. bank and a P.M. bank, allowing DL mainline flights in and out of JFK in between both banks, keeping the number of RJ's in and out of JFK down to a minimum.
