Because it is calculated from your DOH until the physical buyout date sometime next year. For the 55 folks who are furloughed and eligible, that will equal 4-5 years of service... even if most of it was on furlough. It's a huge win.... and I'm taking it!
My only remaining question deals with sick time and vacation. I just looked myself up and I see about 115hrs sick time and about 110hrs of vacation. I'm pretty sure most of that has accrued while on furlough (but I don't really know), how will that be handled?... It shows I have it, so I guess we'll get paid for it.

I think I am going to take it too. Just got off the phone with HR, they are contacting i think forcasting to find out my pay grade. As most of you too are probably not sure what your pay rate is now. I am not furloughed but only have about 20 under me and have a good job flying with the AF reserve, and can find enough work to not go back, so it seems like win win. I have 2 weeks of vacation and a crap ton of sick time. Vacation is paid out, sick time transferred to cobra but im not sure if you could get paid for it. Looks like with may 07 hire Id get 10 weeks of pay plus 2 weeks of vacation. I tink this is taxed at like 25% though right? I think thats what happened last time i sold my vacation.

Hope that's not the case.... According to the memo that came out in regards to the early out package it states that all seperations will occur between January and December of 2012, it also states that no involuntary furloughs will occur until all seperations have occured. So the way I read that is no furloughs at all next year, or at least until all early out peeps have left. I may be off base here, but that's how in interperted the memo. Any thoughts?
Well, it all depends on how many people bite on the early out. If only a few people opt out, then the furloughs will start sooner than later next year. On the other hand, if let’s say 150 people to 300 people take the early out, then you will not see any furloughs till all the early out have separated from the company. That’s how I understand it, but I have been wrong many times before

I left Comair recently, and I can confirm that the IRS taxes the snot out of your vacation payout to the tune of about 1/3. Those crooks turned a $3,500 payout into about $2,300.
