Just look at the last "class" at Shuttle. They were in training in St. Louis and on day 3 were told to go home. Not furloughed, fired because the company didn't need them anymore. If you think an airline is giving you a hug, check for your wallet when its over.

To an employer, perhaps...but not to me as a fellow Pilot.

Well now that I won't be flying I can at least go donate blood to buy some groceries. It sucks but I would have rather found out now than after ground school. However, I have spent the last month memorizing limitations and checklists. It is hard to maintain this information when I am doing nothing with it.

I don't blame SkyWest but 4 days before ground school is a little tough to swallow. I didn't fully believe I was going until I got my flight arrangements. You try not to burn bridges with your previous employer by giving them a decent notice but it may bite you at the last minute. Even if I didn't give them any notice, I could have been axed in ground school like Shuttle.

I might be the eternal optimist but I really think we will get another call soon and have us in another class. SkyWest is my first choice and it is tough to just walk away and go find another job after finally getting hired with them. Not to mention, instructing is really the only job interviewing and even some of those are requiring contracts.

If it makes you guys feel any better, it has happened to almost everyone who has been around flying for a while.

At least you got the courtesy of a phone call...I found out when I turned on CNN on that tuesady morning seven years ago.

Actually, I agree and even thanked the person for calling me. I know it took them a few hours to call about 60 people that were scheduled in ground schools. I know of at least 3 classes that were cancelled, 2 Brasilias and 1 RJ. We were also promised updates in the next few weeks. I didn't like it, but felt like they handled it well. Later I received a formal e-mail with an apology and another explanation.

Poor form for certain. Union have any words? But, you can only be fired after being hired...I think the new catch phrase for the other guys is: 'conditional offer of employment'.

Yeah, we spoke on the phone. No worries my friend. As you know, this industry is VERY cyclical and unfortunately this will be one of those deep valleys until oil goes back down. If the newbies get in at the bottom of this, they will be OK the next go around. We all love to fly and thats why we do this and put up with the BS of this industry.
Ahhhhhh, yes, now I remember. Sorry, how's your wife doing?

Take care.

She's getting by. Deploying to Afghanistan in Sept. I wish I could say I would be sitting to the right of you, playing gear monkey and glorified button pusher, but that won't be happening for a while. I do have a friend that will be flying with you at FAT, his initials are BG, and he's a good dude and smart. He'll be a great co-pilot and captain. Thanks for your concern Jay. Happy 4th to you and your family, and thanks to all those who had to work today.

For now we state only 'Hiring' because of the vast range of updates we're getting.

Any help is appreciated in getting the skinny out to the folks visiting the Skywest page. If you have some solid hiring info, email me at john_at_airlinepilotcentral.com. Hope to give everyone some accurate info, as always. Skywest is a very popular page at APC-

I interviewed Jun 11th and was hired into the CRJ pool I'm guessing cause the study guide they sent me had CRJ's all over it (and CRJ Procedures in it). Was kind of surprised cause I too was under the assumption that the Brazilla was undermanned. Skywest said they had no clue when my class date would be.

Don't pull too much hair out. Those of us that work for them are in the same boat. If you do by chance figure it out let me know.
