Mainly they are fearing Delta and United to do some cuts in their flying. I believe they are being conservatie and wise. It sucked to get the call after I had already quit my job but understood and accepted their justification. We are all in a pool with no class date and no clue when or if we will be trained. My fear is this is exactly what Express Jet said to a friend of mine in their pool last year around Sept/Oct. He never made it to ground school and would have been furloughed even if he did. As solid as SkyWest is, they are not immune to the bad economy. Express Jet was thought to be solid last summer and everyone thought I was a fool for not applying when I met their minimums and held out for SkyWest. My hope is that SkyWest will prosper and have us in training by the end of the year. That is just me being an optimist and no information to back this up.
I agree...they are probably waiting to see what attrition, if any, comes about in SEP, along with the whole UAL, DAL+NWA mess.

do you really believe that training has been cancelled because of hotel space? that doesn't even make sense

Keep being optimistic my friend. We will be in training someday soon. I'm sure of it. I think mngmnt is making good and sound decisions and I will wait for the cows to come home for a class date. Why would I want to go to another company that'll just put me on the street without giving a d*mn.
I believe the above mentioned companies are the safest excluding Delta. My squadron was filled with Delta pilots, now they have shifted to UPS and FedEx.

I agree....much better to not be hired, then hired, then furloughed.

Who's moral? There are many-many CRJ FOs, including myself, who were hired in the last year, and can't see much to be excited about. We were sold on an idea that there was to be "600 new FOs in 08" (a direct quote from the recruiter at the open house), and we would be holding bases of our choice, and possibly a line by now. Well, 8 months of reserve later and I am stuck in a domicile far away from home, and actually moving backwards on the CRJ seniority list due to the EMB120 guys and gals moving over to the jet side. It seems the company sees the need to freeze transfers until further hiring resumes, but keep moral high for the EMB pilots? I feel like a bathmat for the other pilots who paid their dues in the Bro. I understand my place on the seniority list. It's just that I have no moral for the immediate future, and don't understand why SKW is stuffing more pilots into the jet right now. BTW, I did bid for a transition down into the EMB, and was frozen till later this year.

You have not been around that long have you!. Things change realy fast in the airline business. Your lucky you are at a great company that looks out for its workers. 600 pilots was the plan, things change. Hang in there. SkyWest has always pushed through the hard times without a reduction in pilots. This is no different.

Its morale too. Morals are something airline management doesn't have.

I know it sucks to commute across the country but it is hard to have sympanthy for you when so many pilots that have much more seniority in their company are getting furloughed. I think you should be grateful to have a job. Enjoy being a bathmat and getting a paycheck. Republic and Express Jet gave their pilots the same projections last year and now they are on the street. Both really good companies that people thought were safe around the time you were hired at SkyWest. You obviously chose SkyWest over them for a reason.

Who knows why SkyWest is sending more pilots to the jet. Maybe they are expecting some more flying on that end and haven't announced it. I truly think they will benefit leaps and bounds if a regional goes under and are ready to pick up the flying. I think that is what they are preparing for. You might get your wish but hang tight and enjoy the commute for a little longer.

Hopefully I will be the bathmat soon and I will be so grateful.

No matter how bad it gets there is always a new generation of pilots who are waiting in the wings who will take even more.

I never had to spend much time on reserve, so I'm certainly not the one to comment specifically. But, go find one of the 10 -35 year employees who spent years and years on reserve, and had to have 1000's of turbine time to even get in the Metro. I believe the most junior SBA RJ captain is an 8 year employee, and on reserve. Haven't seen him complaining.

Apparently Mesa is still hiring, and it sounds like reserve is non-existent on at least the Dash. Upgrade right off IOE. Wow ! If they have a base near where you live, do you think that would be smart for you to go there ?

They do need EMB FO's, but since they aren't getting any new hires at the moment, perhaps as long as through the winter, you'd have a hard time getting trained with an EMB class.

One additional thing I'll offer. If there is movement in this industry, I can absolutely GUARANTEE that SkyWest will be one of the major players in whatever opens up.

Then there will folks behind you.
