I am not trying to get in the middle of the argument here, and I don't know the whole story of why you got fired Tony other than you didn't pass upgrade. I also like you as a person because you put it all out there and not afraid to speak your mind good, bad, or indifferent. Did you only get one chance, didn't pass, and fired as a result? I was in CRJ transition training the same time you were in upgrade. In the sim, my partner did not pass his checkride (upgrade) along with a few others in my class. Lots of them were transitions but a couple were not and we had the FAA sit in on about 90% of our rides. Everyone that was in my class kept there jobs after re-training and re-testing with the FAA sitting in the jumpseat on ever step. So what was the difference in your case or was there no differences? Someone else stated you must have done much more than fail (or whatever?) to lose your job and its a pass on upgrade or your out thing we have here, but I have not seen that be the case from my eyes yet (See story above) so I have to wonder along with the others and there comments. You may have already stated it here before and I missed it, but I just don't get it. Others have failed upgrade and still are here.....your unfortunately are not and I scratch my head? You should have been given the choice to go back to the right seat on the CRJ and all would have worked out but that is just my opinion. However, at that point would you have had to go through CRJ training again to go back, and the fact all classes after ours were canceled so there was no opportunity to do this so your got the boot? Some seem to get fired around here some do not, why, no clue there but there has to be some reason behind it all...there again maybe not...... its all SkyWest's choice anyway. If we did have a contract that had employment language in it I feel there would be much more constancy here with who stays and has to go, which I fully support! No contract no rights from my view! Sorry for the sidetrack and rant.

Skywest has a great training department and the job they are very good at is preparing you for your written, oral, and sim check. They will work with you after hours, if you request it. You will get additional sim time, if you request it. If you are not ready on the day of the test, it is not their responsiblity. It is solely the test takers responsibility.

Why on earth would they spends tens of thousands of dollars on your training with the goal of looking to fail you so quickly?

Commanding a multi-million dollar aircraft with many, many peoples lives at stake is a privilege, not an entitlement. Not in all cases, but in many cases, unions breed and foster an entitlement mentality, IN MY OPINION. Flame away, I don't really care.

Skywest is the most fair, honest, descent company I have ever worked for. I am 41 years old and worked for many different companies, large and small in my life so far.

The FEW that have been fired over the years did alot more, and I mean alot more than what you will be lead to believe on these forums.

I do work at SkyW, and have for considerably longer than you. I can tell you that you are wrong! You may not be privy to the info, but I do know of good people who were "helped out the door"...

Here's the thread that discussed all the gory details:

http://www.airlinepilotforums.com/re...s-upgrade.html

In summary, I failed the oral, then the next morning at 6am did the sim, which I failed also (with the same guy who failed me on the oral).

Don't worry, when he filled out the pink slips for both the ATP failure and EMB type rating failure in both categories, he didn't waste any energy on identifying which area I failed. Just wrote every area.

I did get my ATP last Tuesday, and the examiner was a bit confused how I could fail the oral and keep going and even be able to fail the sim (practical) part. The practical test standards say otherwise. And he was confused, I think, how I could fail everything. By the way, the guy I had Tues was former SkW, too. Good guy.

Anyhoo, the company elected not to give me a retake on either the oral or practical. That decision on my behalf by the company was my "third" strike. They did mention how the FAA would have to be there for the retake, "and they really didn't want that."

Of course, my ATP written timed out prior to my ATP retake, so I got to take that again, too. I'll do recurrent on the CRJ next week to lift the "circling VMC only" and "SIC" limitations.

Lots of them were transitions but a couple were not and we had the FAA sit in on about 90% of our rides. ..... You should have been given the choice to go back to the right seat on the CRJ and all would have worked out but that is just my opinion.

As you know, had I been a transition, I would be golden. Fail the program, just go back to the previous seat. Upgrade failure... fired. Seems like it should be opposite to me: Captains have no excuse to fail. They're gods !!!

Of course, I'm kidding. The rule is crude. Like cutting off hands for stealing. But as long as you've got a majority of Captain Blow Hards, that rule will be there another 15 or 20 years... union or no union.

Mr. Williams, insult me, call me names, whatever. I am truly sorry that you failed your oral and failed your sim check and were consequentially terminated from Skywest. This is a tough business. I would never wish professional failure on any fellow pilot.

I will remember you now though, I won't forget your name in the future. Good luck to you in your future regional airline career.

. . . next thread . . .

It's more than a good kick in the balls; getting canned is the gift that keeps on giving ;-) What regional would hire somebody fired from another regional? I seriously doubt that there will be a "regional airline career".... Thankfully.

I guess you have no problem with your previous statement, "did alot more, and I mean alot more".

Good luck in your next thread.

JD...Tony is a good dude. He got screwed by a crappy policy that will probably never change at Skywest. That company is rapidly going downhill...with the health care BS, and lots of other little things that my buddies still there are putting up with. I am glad that I am not there anymore, even the crap they pulled when I left was below the belt. One day the pilots (and employees in general) will figure out that everything that company does is to benefit the top brass. It was not like that when I first started there and it does not have to be like that now, but make no mistake....that is the bottom line!

ALPA Supports NMB’s Changes to Union Election Rules

ALPA president Capt. John Prater testified at a National Mediation Board (NMB) public hearing this week in support of the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that the Board published on November 3, 2009, regarding airline representation elections. Under this proposal, the NMB would no longer count all nonparticipants as “no” votes in union elections, allowing the elections to be decided by the majority of those actually voting, as are most other elections.

“ALPA believes that the Board’s proposal is a long overdue step to level the playing field in union elections,” Prater said. “It’s a realistic but important update that ensures basic fairness and recognizes that conditions for voting have changed since the 1930s,” when the original balloting rules were adopted.

ALPA joined with the Transportation Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and several of its member unions in unanimously supporting this proposed rule change. Edward Wytkind, president of the TTD, stated that today’s method of discerning voter intent is inherently flawed and unreliable.

“By automatically assigning non-participating voters a ‘no’ vote, these procedures are declaring intent when none is expressed,” Wytkind said during his testimony. “There are a host of reasons why individuals do not vote . . . we’ve seen in 9 out of 10 union elections in recent history workers face an employer-run campaign to block unionization.”

The public hearing also featured several individual airline employees who testified in support of the change on their own behalf, including David Boehm, a member of the ALPA Organizing Committee during the 2007 SkyWest organizing drive. “I’m here to tell you a story about SkyWest,” Boehm said before the Board. “In 2007, SkyWest was rapidly expanding. Over 40 percent of SkyWest pilots had been there for less than two years, most fresh out of college. Today, we remain the largest group of unrepresented pilots in the industry.”

Boehm went on to describe the challenges of getting 2,600 pilots to participate in voting under the current NMB election rules presuming that nonvoters vote against representation, especially with so many pilots still on probation with the company. “There was a certain sense of intimidation by management,” he said. “These pilots were trying to learn not only how to fly new equipment in training, but who the NMB was, what their rights are under the Railway Labor Act, and the benefits of having union representation.”

A total of 31 interested parties testified at the hearing, presenting both labor and management viewpoints on the proposed rule and its effects on the transportation industry. The NMB will receive additional public comments until Jan. 4, 2010. For more information, including the list of hearing speakers, submitted written testimonies, and various public comments on the rule, visit Proposed NMB Representation Rulemaking.

I think it's according to 3 juries and Judges now. Flew with DD last week. He's a great individual who got hosed and fought back when most of us would have laid down and given up due to lack of hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight. Just to have protection from crap like that is worth 2% of my 20,000 this year. I'm over the whole "Family" thing they start stuffing down your throat on day one at Skywest. I think skywest is a great place to work and I won't be going anywhere else, but I think we are headed the wrong direction. I'm sick of being told we are a family and then being treated like a bum on the street. My "Family" would never have taken away my healthcare options. I like Chip, I think he does his job well and in one way it is good for me, he keeps my company profitable and thus I keep my job. On the other hand it's bad for me because he takes from me and the mouths of my children to keep the company profitable.
