Skywest

Thanks Clickclickboom. I was sooo tempted to even as for you response by name... You have had a lot of presence on this forum and to some, not so welcome but I see the honesty in your writing. It's extremely hard to get a feel for who to trust and what to believe and I'm about to pull my hair out. Good thing is my wife and I know where the end game is and that life will get better. If someone feels that a pilot getting in at this time won't get a couple thousand hours in about three to five years and be looking desirable to the majors, please chime in. But for now, as long as Skywest isn't in complete disarray, I'd like to bite the bullet now, knowing that in 6 months I will be above at least 300+ guys.
I have no dog in the fight. They don't like my posts because they are contrary to their fairytales. Been doing this for quite awhile, seen lots come and many go. Heard the hard luck stories, for every one of the dream lines heard here, there are dozens unheard. Skywest is in a transitional phase right now, so what you see today might or might not be tomorrow. The hangar in BOI has a 60 ft high door, thats tall enough for an A330, SKYW isn't getting 330s so whats the reason, its a double decade rental agreement. DAL has declared all out war on Alaska Air, in SEA, we are going to Alaska in May, for DAL. Lots of stuff in the works, what that means is any body's guess, the proving runs are taking place as we speak. This is irrefutable info, the growth concept, is as likely as the shrinking concept, truth be told SGU is guessing at this point, otherwise why would they have both plans. My Ouija board is about as good as anyone elses, add some dice and roll away.
What I will say is this industry is difficult on families, and being on the bottom of the list can be more so.
Overall this industry will be a dream come true for some who got in early and the late comers will end up swinging their gear for a long time. The guys coming into the industry now are for the most part in their late 20s-early 30s, add 35 years to get to 65 means that for every guy who gets the quick upgrade there will be someone sitting in the right seat for a long time.

I wouldn't worry about "getting time", you will fly. The drawback is that at first it might be TDY and wacky double deadhead to go fly :45. I have friends on reserve who break guarantee every month and some who never fly.
As soon as you can get a line (maybe a month or two at the junior bases) PBS will load you up with 90+ hours of credit every month.

I've been moving up 30-40 a month (in attrition) with classes of 60+ getting added to the list. Big upgrade classes have helped 5-7% increases in domicile seniority every month. Things are moving, this is barely covering attrition and staffing is still thin.

Just about to apply to Skywest. After reading about the last 80 pages, i have narrowed down my questions if y'all could be so kind to answer. I'd be based in ORD, seems like the CRJ's are the safe choice.
1- After training, are the new hires actually approaching the guarantee in FLIGHT TIME? I wouldn't want to be sitting on reserve AND not flying. New hire buddy at PSA is getting about 70 hrs/ mo.
2- Is it actually reasonable to pick up extra trips? I've already heard how you can't pick up a trip on the same duty day... Kinda inefficient since you're already at the airport and offering to fill the slot.
3. I'm young and have a child and if you can't tell yet, I'm trying to do the best for my family and choose the right carrier... Sooo is Skywest the right choice for getting the flight time and progressing in a manner comparable to other regionals while making a little more than $24 an hour?
4. Stats show second year pay is $39, does this still hold true and is that a guarantee at 13 months?
Thanks you very much guys/gals!

Disagree. I have 700-800 people below me after two and a half years (a year and a half of no hiring) and I'm moving up 40 numbers a month. I know of at least 6-7 below me that left in the last month.

Thanks to all for the input! Yea, I'm 24 and in it for the adventure, not just the money, but I need to survive, feeding three mouths. So as far as I can see, Skywest is in no better shape than and other outfit right now so I'm just gunna throw the app in and hope for the best. And thanks to the guys who are backing my 300+ in seniority comment... I guess what I'm getting at is I know for a fact that the sooner I get a class date, the less amount of people get a number before me... I'm not saying it's an exceptional time to come into all this , but acceptable??? ... That's what I'm here to find out.

Based upon the wildly different opinions here, there is only a guarantee, that it will be, a wild ride. Welcome to the airline experience. The only question is if you don't like it will you be willing to walk away, if the answer is yes, you will be fine.

It's still a regional, get in class as soon as you can. The current attrition and hiring numbers will yield a quick increase in QOL.
SkyWest reserve and CS needs a complete makeover. Just don't forget because you didn't have to deal with the BS for more than a month or two doesn't mean it's ok.
