What do we do when TSA is seeing 3+ hour lines because they decreased staffing? That's right send more (of the lowest risk) people into the line!

This is to be in compliance with ICAO Annex 17.

Most people don't think too far into the future. The airlines love it and can use it to get new hires. Lots of CFIs only look at first year pay and upgrade times. They never look at 2nd, 3rd, 4th year pay or captain pay.

And that's why I was asking about the bonus and if it was a yearly deal or not. Seems odd to me that you could actually be making less money after your first year, but I guess whatever gets them in the tent, right?

Perhaps. but second year you also get more financial rewards

So it's basically a wash is what it sounds like.

Thanks for the answers! I've been a 135 guy my whole career and I've been looking to get some 121 time and I'm just trying to figure out realistic financials.

Yes, the trick is to get people in the door. Once they are here (or anywhere else it) gets increasingly hard to leave because you are leaving "intangibles" aka seniority behind and you would have to start over ....

At that point, management has the pilot group by the b.... and they get away with lots of things that wouldn't fly in other industries.

Either way, I wouldn't worry so much about bonus, first year pay vs. second year pay etc.

I would pick a 121 carrier based on whether you can live in base and for how long you would be on reserve....

No problem, to be conservative , whatever you make per hour x 1000 is what your income will be. I would recommend the CRJ for holding a line, the ERJ is a ? For when you'll hold a line , the over ride helps a little 2nd year. When researching pay you have to research the contract too, it's far deeper than hourly rate, some places don't have cancellation pay or don't pay 100% for deadheads.

Or like Skywest, only pays for scheduled dh. Overblocked on a dh by an hour? Sorry

Solid advice and that's exactly why I've been looking at SW; simply for the fact that I live in DEN. Thanks again!

and final piece of advice ...

go to a regional you could imagine yourself with for a while (5+ years). The quick in and out may happen but it may take a lot longer. Going into something you are not sold on and you only do to move on may get you stuck in a horrible place once things turn ugly.

So a rumor of reopening pay talks early.

No thanks.
Don't need the .25¢ like you need pilots.
