It almost seemed like I had to submit right away, like it was all or nothing. I didn't want to risk clicking "submit profile" when I wasn't even ready to submit the whole thing yet. Does anyone who went through this process recently know? Don't want to look dumb by accidentally submitting something incomplete.

You can log back in and make updates. You'll log into your dashboard. At the bottom of the page, there will be a link to "Edit Application".

I would proceed under the assumption that nothing is saved. It doesn't take long. Under an hour from what I remember. Curious, what's an MCI exam?

Edit: Nevermind I looked it up. If you're military don't sweat over the app. Welcome aboard in advance.

I fly Part 91 on the side (corporate PC-12 gigs.) Am I allowed to continue that once I am a Skywest employee?

Skyhawk121 04-20-2017 11:57 AM

Probably not, but I guess it would depend on how much you do on the side and how much you fly at SkyWest since that can cause legality issues if you fly too much.

Understood, thanks for the reply.

Part 91 flying is allowed. Any certificate flying (91K, 135) is not.

As a newhire you'll be on reserve for a while (or not, if you're lucky.) Even off reserve, as a jr. lineholder you'll get 12 days off per month. On reserve, you'll often get 4 on / 3 off. It can be quite difficult to fit in more flying around your SKW schedule, and if you commute then it's nearly impossible.

Once you become more senior and get more control over your schedule, life becomes easier. One senior FO in my base pretty much flight-instructs all day every day; SKW is this dude's side job. Plenty of other dudes have other gigs such as real estate, etc...but that is super hard to do when you're on reserve, or a junior lineholder getting CN'd into 17-hour 4-days followed by an 8.5 hour 2-day. (that's 6 days of work in a row, of course.)...

I think SKYW is one of the few if not only airline that lets the pilots fly 91 without needing to ask permission.
But then again I like to make up things on the internet.

You are correct sir (or ma'am)...

If you make $$ on the side, flying, it interferes with 117 rest rules, I think. So if there ever was an incident and the FAA digs around, it's not on SKYW for violating them, it would be on you. And probably lose your SKYW job..? Definitely a worst case scenario.

That's my rationale to be careful with what I fly on the side.
