Plus, you'll actually have trips instead of reserve much more quickly out of BWI. There are guys in MCO who have been here over a year just now flying "mixed" lines -- some trips, some reserve -- and commuting by air to a reserve block stinks, any way you cut it. Meanwhile, someone in BWI was off reserve within six months (including the two months of initial training in DAL).

While there are junior guys filling in the bottom slots in MCO, it's otherwise a very senior base, meaning moving up that base's seniority is slow going. So yes, definitely BWI without even a second thought.

Is it worth to commute (con) to MCO with better trips (pro) or drive to BWI knowing my ride is always there (pro) but have early shows and late finishes and deal with ZDC being a pain with EDCTs (con).

Like the others said, BWI is a no brainer in your situation. Seniority will be vastly better and no airplane commute drama. You'll have more opportunity to make more money and have exponentially better QOL.

Orlando is right in the heart of Gods waiting room. Just as you move up a number, two super senior 62 year old captains buy their retirement home in the Villages, get a golf cart, and bid into MCO.
As mentioned above, the bottom is being filled by new hires, but it is a base with wild manning swings from season to season and is perennially senior.

Word.

Been like that since the day MCO opened.

And if it's not the super senior folks pre positioning for retirement, there's a long line of (currently) junior capts commuting to MDW, HOU and BWI waiting to get back to MCO. More than a few of them give up and bid back to the right seat in MCO after a while.

Default MCO base seniority

I am from Florida. I would love to move back. Even played around with buying a great house in Satellite Beach near some friends and fixing it up. The seniority picture in MCO was one of the main things keeping me from doing that. I don’t want to move to a base only to be forced to commute for years if I want to take early upgrade.
We decided to stick it out where we are and commute for the time being and make the decision later. I am glad that I work a job that allows me to even entertain that decision, but it tortures me a little as well.

Oh, I forgot to mention the large number of senior FOs that bypass upgrade and sit on the top of the FO list in MCO for years.

With the lack of premium in MCO that might be changing. One can only hope.

Speaking of age and seniority, does anyone know what percentage of the pilot group at SWA is under the age of 40? It would be good to know for seniority progression during the latter portion of one's career.

Sorry for the thread drift.

There are about 1200 retiring after 1/1/43. There are 9550 pilots on the seniority list.
