I dunno man. I have friends at pretty much every other airline, and as far as the big 3, Fed Ex and UPS, Frontier, Alaska, and Jetblue I don't see much of a difference in their quality of life and mine. My best friend is a UAL 320 captain and he took the whole month of July off. And except for Frontier, they are all making more money than me (although the PHL based guys I met the other day on a jumpseat said that everyone is crediting over 100 hours if they want to, so even Frontier is making more). Wide body FOs at the legacies are making more than me as a captain here. I don't think it should be that way.

My point is we really need a raise.

Scariest environment imaginable. That’s all you had to say.

I don't think we should have to sacrifice much to get better pay. While nothing is free, LCCs are going to have to compete with legacies to get pilots in the door the next few years. There's no reason why we can't align our incentives with management in order to attract and keep pilots on property. I know Spirit doesn't see much attrition, but I think that will change as junior FOs get opportunities at legacies to fly widebodies. We have the airplanes coming and need butts in the seat to make money off those assets.

It is when people say they are comfortable being compensated less for it. It’s a myth anyway that we have some industry leading QOL and it keeps getting perpetuated. As RonnyK said, as a body of work our CBA QOL provisions are about industry standard if not slightly behind. Sure we have some items better than other groups and many that are worse. It cannot be refuted that we are very far behind the industry in compensation and that shouldn’t be acceptable for a CBA that is essentially average elsewhere.

This QOL myth gets sold as a new hire then perpetuated so people can justify their low pay. And sure coming from a regional it sure seems amazing but if we are honest with ourselves and really take a long look at the industry at the major level the QOL argument is a smoke screen.

This is what management wants you to believe. Our QOL isn’t much better than the other majors. We have some good stuff in our contract but I also think it’s worse in a lot of ways.

Default United v. Spirit

I’d really like to know what these industry leading QOL provisions we have are? The 4 days off rule is nice but if you’re bottom 50% in base/seat and/or commute you’re most likely waving it so you can get a better schedule. Dropping to zero is great if you use that. Haven’t really met anyone who utilizes it often though. What else am I missing that we have and others don’t? I’m sure there are some.

Our reserve rules are below average at best.

One leg plus a red eye needs to go.

I’d like International override anytime I go through customs. I’d like a red eye override. I’d also like a kicker above 80 hours that pays out at 1.5X like a lot of other airlines have. Maybe open time pickup paying at 1.5X.

We don’t do red-eyes’s+1, green grid prior to IOT, no ready reserve. Those are a couple off the top of my head that some of the others don’t have….

What major has ready reserve?

What major does red eyes plus 1?

I’ll give you the green grid as I’m unfamiliar if anyone else has anything like that.

United doesn’t have two hour wait times to get ahold of scheduling. Their hotels are top notch as well.
