SJU is the only blue or orange circle on this map that isn’t a Crew Base between Spirit or JetBlue.

Is it too soon to start the SJU base rumors?

It used to be a Spirit base. Make SJU great again.

For a hot minute. Just long enough to convince the águilas to move to FLL or DFW.

It would be for us (B6) by now but there are too many political hoops to jump and hands to grease with cash in their corrupt gov’t. Our mgmt. has wanted to open up one down there for a while.

I wonder if the 321XLR would have the legs for Barcelona or Madrid?
Could be a great hub for Latin American ops, with US Customs.
...pure speculation off the top of my head, FWIW

XLR would work for SJU-MAD. You could even use mostly A220 or regular 320s to hit a ton of spots from SJU:

A map from Great Circle Mapper - Great Circle Mapper

The problem is that FLL would also work for most of these and has much better O&D

They have publicly said the desire is to make FLL into a connect hub in the future, which would mean a lot of stuff like this.

I'm just a point A to point B guy, but I'm just imagining SJU as a hub connecting all points Latin America plus Spain, and also a hurricane season alternate hub to FLL, MIA and MCO for Lat Am pax to clear customs when Florida is shuttered from a big storm.

The question would be if the few extra routes made possible with a SJU hub be worth the infrastructure/equipment investment and additional gates needed, especially if customs personnel would need to be beefed up to handle the volume. Meanwhile T4 at FLL would probably be more than happy to accommodate with a reduction in the old NK routes that JetBlue doesn’t keep.

It would be a smart idea to diversify and not put all of our eggs in one basket (FLL in this case). We (JB) have been burned by our Northeast centric route network in recent years.

I do think a SJU connect hub would be easier to do with just A220s and A320s. Many of those longer legs from FLL would either require LR/XLRs, or just not doing it at all because it's too long and thin of a route.

Out of curiosity, what is the current size of both Spirit’s and JetBlue’s seniority list? I think it would be interesting to see if the combined company grows in say the next 5 years, stays the same size, or shrinks. It’s a good snap shot to take right after the merger announcement.
