Okay... long time reader, first time poster. I read this thread from time to time and I am always shaking my head, and many times in disbelief over some of the things that are being said on here.

So many people have such bad attitudes about this new contract. I would say 80% of the people I fly with say the same thing: "Why should we get leading industry pay? Why should we make as much as American Airlines or Delta pilots? We aren't anywhere near their size." Hate to break it to ya fellas - IT DOESN'T MATTER. We are the MOST PROFITABLE airline percentage wise.

Yes, they have more airplanes, they go worldwide with a much larger route structure, they make more money dollar wise. But with that comes more expenses, too! Spirit is hiring employees because of GROWTH, AA is hiring mainly because of ATTRITION - retirements. When the next financial disaster happens, and it will, I'd personally rather be with the airline that has cash in the bank to support the growth as well as the economic pitfalls. AA is the biggest airline in the world - big deal. I remember Eastern, too.

We do the same job. We carry the same people (more actually - per aircraft). There is absolutely no reason why the Spirit pilot group should make any less than the same professionals in the same equipment.

As somebody said earlier - it's because of attitudes like that we will see the first TA be voted in. Stop being scared people. The company has bigger and better things (in THEIR eyes) and they NEED this contract QUICK. Lets take advantage of that.

^^^ this guy gets it. Unfortunately this is a function of spirit being such a dumpy airline for so long that people just expect poor compensation. Many of the old guard don't even know what the other carriers are getting paid these days. I fly with them I know. Hopefully the bottom 900 of the seniority list know what type of compensation is normal. This isn't Ned's DC9 casino charter anymore.

You have made some accurate observations but let me help you understand. Prior to the 2001-hires this airline was having a very difficult time retaining pilots due to the high volume of Legacy carrier hiring. In an effort to minimize the turnover the hiring team was given a mandate to hire only those who lacked 'big airline' qualifications. This meant those with no college degree, DUIs, accident history, and other crimes. It was successful to some degree. Anyone who doubts this can ask one of those interviewers. He is a checkairman now with the initials RW.

This airline is top heavy with an older group of pilots that were never capable of working at a better airline. Their low self esteem and fears were for many years spread through the lower ranks until it literally became part of our culture. Despite our relatively recent success as an airline this culture lives on in the webbing of our culture. Remember now that many of those individuals went on to become our union reps and checkairmen. They have a captive audience.

Hope that helps.

If this was true, the current culture aspect as you've described it, I wouldn't be here.

You and Tine must be flying together. I've refuted this idea that the top of the Spirit sen list is filled with "pilots that were never capable of working at at better airline" so many times that anyone who's been on APC for more than six months can likely write it for me. I can give you plenty of examples of 1990's Spirit hires that had already worked for major airlines. Most of the top 50 came from Air Florida. It wasn't their fault their employer went broke. Yes, we have our 2%'rs, but for most of us Spirit was just the next to last step on the career ladder. But you're correct in that for years our instructor/CheckAirman corps has controlled the culture of our airline. Go ahead, refute me. I'm going back to live under my rock. Maybe I'll go have some Bone Daddys ribs and listen to the blues. Buh bye
