Sadly, they changed hotels well over a year ago.

Now all we're left with is the overpriced restaurant and poor transportation.

For those of you who are interested, I got a call this past week. ~6500 TT, 375 TPIC, no internal recs, no job fairs. I'm on 2 union committees at my current airline and I do volunteer service outside of work. I listed all of that on my resume but I'm not sure if it played into their decision. Took about 6 weeks from when I applied.

Very much looking forward to the opportunity!

Good luck! Honest I think it's getting very thin on good pilots out there. The job fairs only go so far....

Default Hotel for Training

Just got my hotel for new hire training. I'll be at the Crown Plaza. It looks pretty nice, maybe even renovated. Does not appear to have a kitchen, maybe a fridge. I'll be without a car. Has anyone stayed there before? What am I in for? Anywhere to walk to get cheaper food? How is lunch handled during training?
Thanks in advance

^ I believe that is the hotel we have been using for a quite a while. I will let others fill you in but its a nice hotel, a few places within walking distance and Lunch during training is on your own. Good little place in the FBO, I recommend the Silver Linings Salad

Not a great long stay hotel by any stretch. Microwave and fridge in the room, so some things can be made in your room, but limited. Some food locations close, but they will get expensive quick. Several blocks away is an area with lots of food options and a grocery store. It's certainly not an ideal location, though the hotel itself is pretty nice and the pool deck has hosted many a group "study" session.

As for lunch, at least during the first two weeks of indoc it's either bring your own, at the lunch café next door in the Sheltair lobby, or off airport if others in the class have wheels.

Sorry to report, but it could be much better, and thus far it's not.

If it's absolutely impossible to bring a car, finding a great deal on a long term rental would be worth doing a 4 way split with others in the class. Relying on the hotel for drop off and pick up from class does become a colossal waste of your precious time, not to mention the food savings from being able to drive to much lower cost options.

I personally rented a car every other weeks. I can get a car from Ace for about $10-$14 for 24 hours. Laundry mat is about 5 min walk. Publix is a little more than a mile from the hotel. As far as food options, lots of fast food about a 5-10 min walk from the hotel. Just about everything is North (Behind the hotel, towards downtown). I personally think the Crown Plaza is a bad choice for a long term hotel. Transportation is a hit or miss for pick up at the training center. Sometimes the wait is 10 min, sometimes it's 40 min. I personally would bring food for lunch, since the food at the training center is very expensive.

Just Google or Bing for some places. There are Winn Dixie and Publix grocery stores in the area, although a good walk in the heat. Several eating establishments closer to the hotel are Lester's Diner (highly recommended), El Tamarindo Café, Pollo Tropical, Anthony's Pizza, and a few fast food joints relatively nearby. Tom Jenkins is a great BBQ place around the corner and down the street a bit. It helps to hook up with somebody with a car, or you will be taking lots of showers after walking around in that heat. Hope this helps.
