Where is the union during this meltdown? Why haven't they talked to the feds or our legal team and advised us on whether this could get someone violated for doing what JS is asking.

Guys nothing prevents the captain from filing his own flight plan with concurrence from dispatch. Not saying I would do it but nothing would require an ASAP. The dispatcher files flight plans without you right? You just would have to go over it together. That brings up the point mentioned before that there is nothing stopping dispatch from filing over the phone just like you could so why do it. Just saying it wouldn't require an ASAP assuming you and the dispatcher went over the release together.
This is of course my own opinion based on the reference people gave of FOM 7.1. I'm certainly open to being proved wrong with another reference.

As soon as the first ACARS message went out, asking to file our own flight plans, the Union should have sent a blast email out to 1)Show support for any CA that refuses to file their own flightplan, as it possibly violates our FOM and 2) Notify the pilots that Ackerman will be on a flight this morning to Miramar to request a meeting with top level management to deal with this.
Im sure there is a lot of back and forth emailing within the MEC over this, but the silence is starting to remind me of the past MEC. At least the prior MEC didnt promise more communication, unlike this quiet MEC is doing.

FAR 121.533/121.535/121.537 plus a call to the FAA would suggest otherwise. But what you do in non of my business.

I'm no fan of the MEC.. But how can you just assume they knew what was going on from the very first acars? From all my experience this company has always been stubborn to say, "we got it, don't want your help" instead of volunteering any information to the union.
So I blame the membership for their failure to contact their LEC rep if they got a message.
And yes please do file an ASAP. Hopefully the FAA will how bad it really was and do something about it.

My guess is that there was a problem with sabre, maybe even just the function that actually files the flight plans. Most likely the crews were given the normal pile of paperwork, prepared by the dispatcher.... And simply asked to file the flight plan. That's not a lack of operational control.
