Thanks in advance
From indoc class start date, you could be a line holder in 737 SFO or 756 SFO in 6 months or less.

thanks! Also what would be best way to bid, say I wanted 756 EWR

is it best to bid that in SFO then move to EWR or bid straight 737 EWR and try move to the 756 after?

or does it all really not matter all that much
thanks again!

Impossible to say for sure is 100% the correct answer. Just too many variables.

The next best answer is "not long" ... in the greater scheme of things

They've had something like 10 bids in the last 12 months.

if ewr is what you want bid anything in EWR that isn’t widebody, unless you want that too. If music stops and you’re stuck in sfo 756 you’d not be happy. Caveat being you only want to go through training once.

I agree. In indoc I was tempted to bid the equipment I wanted in a different base across the continent, but decided to bid NB at home instead. It turns out, I could have got back to my base in that equipment within a couple months, but had there been some major world event and the music stopped, I could have been stuck commuting transcon. Because I was NB, I could have conceivably bid up to that equipment in base on any subsequent vacancy, but didn't feel like restarting training. But- I had options and if the music had stopped I would have been in home base.

In short, bidding NB in your hometown base keeps all your options available once the equipment you want is offered in a subsequent vacancy.

Sometimes your seniority won't allow XYZ no matter how many stars you wish upon, but in general

Base changes are easy
Type changes are hard

You gotta decide whether you want 756 or EWR more and bid accordingly

Commuting from Oregon (PDX/MFR/RDM) to SFO, what would be better for QOL overall: 737, A320, or 756 and why?

Short answer: it depends.

Based on the SFO fleets you listed, 737 has the most diverse flying and is a growing fleet. But you can expect to fly 2-3 legs per day on average, and quite a few red eyes.

A320 is basically RJ flying; lots of short legs (I believe 3-4 legs per day, someone correct me if I’m wrong) and not too many diverse locations. Hope you like Des Moines!

756 SFO is a dying fleet, but United keeps filling lots of NHs into 756 SFO. Your relative seniority in base will be faster (for the time being) in the 756 compared to the guppy or bus, affording the possibility to hold commutable lines quicker. Hopefully you like flying to Boston or Chicago all month, because 756 SFO is almost entirely transcon, with a handful of Hawaii trips.

The trips on the 737 vs the 320 are basically the same. Unless you are talking about locations like HI, SA & Caribbean, you wouldn't notice the difference. Generally, the benefit to the 737 is the fleet size relative to the 320 (although both are pretty small in SFO). SFO seems to have more 4-leg days on both fleets than anywhere else. Also a lot of redeyes on the west coast. If it were me, and I were commuting, I'd perhaps look elsewhere if the commute options were the same.
