You’re exactly right. The only way they can make it mandatory is to structure it so that all of the people in the class are eligible and that is all that is offered.

The current vacancy has 58 unfilled B737 CA positions. So if you don’t get DEN in your initial bid, you will get it very soon after.

Not exactly a guarantee, the eightball might not meet the requirements to be awarded a captain spot.

Say at the bottom of NH bidding, there's two spots available left, one 737 CA and 320 FO. The senior guy has 1000hrs 121, junior guy is mil and both want the 320. Seniority should say the senior guy gets the 320 FO spot which I assume is what happens. What does the junior guy get?

In the case of this last drop you could grab one of the unlimited 737 FO spots....or the CA bid. Any mil pilot would be able to self certify 500 hrs. If there were really truly only 1 seat left to bid (737 CA) then that's what you get. I don't see that being the case anytime soon though?

The scenario that you say is extremely unlikely, mainly because of age. But it’s still seniority system and the senior pilot would get what they want of what’s left.

Not all military hours count. There are specific criteria that allows hours to count. Single pilot time won't count, nor helicopter time for example.
