Nope, civilian CFI and 135 prior to OO.

Doesn’t seem that hard at other bases either, although I haven’t done it recently. At least at DCA and EWR, you have to go in person to the M&G with them.

Agreed, and to that point, it takes a significant amount of initiative and time investment on behalf of the recommendor to get the candidate the M&G and then attend it with them. That says something.

At the M&G you intruduce your candidate and then tell the CP why you believe they would make a good United pilot. Then it's the candidates turn. The Chief will ask them a few 'interview' type questions, and offer some suggestions should they get an interview invite. 20-30 min tops and a great 'practice interview'. That's how my experience was anyway.

My understanding, which comes directly from a interviewer/recruiter friend is a thumbs up from the CP M&G adds a defined amount of points to a candidates' application score just like a type rating, etc. The significant weighting of a successful M&G can easily push a canditate over the top and get them the call.

Any active United pilot can do one per year unless that's changed. I was still on probation when I recommended my buddy who got hired.

Just from my year and change at OO there's probably a dozen or more people that I flew with and got to know that I haven't necessarily stayed in touch with, that, if they took the intitiative and reached out to me I would be glad to help them out with a M&G after catching up. Surely anyone that's been there any significant amount of time would know someone like myself. It's worth the effort is what I'm saying, to catch up with an old friend, and maybe more.

I think the point is that the OP said he knows no one at United, so the discussion on whether a M&G is the game changer for someone at OO isn’t all that relevant to him. Not many people are going to go through that effort for someone who they met on their jumpseat. Might be useful for someone else, though.

The point is that there is no way for the most part to figure out who goes where unless we keep in touch.

Do they know you work for UAL? Then, assuming they know you work for UAL, do they have any means to get ahold of you?

As far as I understand it, people under one year with the company are not supposed to set up M&G at UAL. Is that a thing?

No, it’s not. Individual CPOs can largely do what they want, though. I don’t know what every office does, but there was a poster a few posts up saying that he had done it on probation.

1500hr TT, 500hr SIC at OO. Have an offer at an LCC. Still considering if sidestepping is the right move, or if I should just upgrade at OO in the next 6-ish months and hope UA calls soon after.

Would now be a good time to submit the app to UA? Biggest question is whether its an updateable application, as I'm obviously not competitive yet and I plan to update my hours and employment as those change to be more competitive going forward. But I also don't want to submit it if it's not updateable and might wait until I'm more competitive..?

Traditional advice is to always climb the ladder every chance you get.
