Default Making sure I made the right decision

Hi all,
Just turned down a November class date at f9 to stay at my AA WO regional. About 650 SIC and looking at an upgrade award in January, on the line as a CA in April. UA is my primary goal and just wanted to make sure I'm making the right decision to stay where I am and hustle to get TPIC instead of jumping ship to a ULCC.
Any insight would be appreciated!

where would you prefer to spend the rest of your career if you never got hired anywhere else? Ask yourself that, answer honestly, and there you go.

no way to kmow but AA WO is the best possible mistake if you’re wrong. You’re guaranteed a major job eventually.

UA hiring for 2026 looks strong. Competitor regional captains are sought after. Also the ulcc model is looking rough. Id keep the guaranteed AA mainline job and stalk united.

My friends are getting interviews with United from F9 at 2500 total time and as low as 1000 turbine SIC.

You should really be asking yourself where you’d rather be when things slow down. Me personally, I probably would have taken it.

I think you made a good call. But it’s really hard to tell. Pursue all the evaluator/training opportunities that you can once you upgrade. Go to every job fair you can.

Kind of depends. What’s your total time? Any 135 or non-121 turbine experience. Four year college degree and in what? Do you live in your base currently? Do you live in or near an F9 base? While the ULCC model isn’t doing well right now it has an ALPA union, meaning you would probably get the same preferential treatment for an interview most NK pilots get currently if F9 went under or furloughed.

But why ask now? If you turned the opportunity down (unless you just deferred it to a later date) you’ve probably already burned that bridge behind you.

Well as I understand it, you made your decision…….unless it was just a deferral.

Some people here will say you made the right decision, some people will say you made the wrong decision. You won’t know until your career is over.

In the not too distant past, regional pay was so low…..for the financial aspect of it alone your decision would have been very questionable. But regional pay being what it is today………staying while maybe not what I’d do…certainly is justifiable.

Success in life not to mention an airline career really comes down to the decisions you make under the most pressure where there isn’t a clear right or wrong answer…….But hey that’s why we get paid the Big Bucks…to make tough calls.

This was exactly my scenario, AA WO regional, got class date at F9 when I had 700 hrs SIC as a FO. I stayed at my regional and now am a captain. Still haven’t heard anything from UA almost 500 TPIC in. Still trying to determine if it was the right decision. Maybe truth to going to ULCC and getting furloughed is a fast track…

There are many people from spirit etc not getting calls because the environment has changed and tpic has importance again. I think you made the right call, you could get furloughed from a ulcc and while the mainline type rating is great I think tpic outweighs it personally.
