I can tell you how it was in the pilot grievance world a few years back. It may have changed since, but if a fourth event can't be substantiated and is more than three events in a ninety-day period...you're considered an unreliable employee and fired. At the third event you will definitely get an in-office discussion.

If you're ever caught "double-dipping" (sick call coincident with guard activity), one can be terminated on the spot, although I've never seen that happen specifically.

Below these types of thresholds, "often" is quite subjective. Anything close to thresholds or consistent invites withering scrutiny.

Last I remember, if you stayed out sick on multiple consecutive pairings... It was still one sick call! Thus, if one ....you get the drift. If you want to help some furloughees out... Start maximizing dollars AND days off anyone nearing retirement. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is never any "news" until it is in writing. Everything else is pure speculation with most rumors I find to be started in the training department or chief pilot offices.

I can honestly say I haven't heard squat as far as rumors go regarding anything on a new bid. Of course we all "speculate" the company is going to start moving aircraft around to various hubs/bases/domiciles.

They'd be wise to gear up for 14 Feb.

Default got this today

Continental (L-CAL) Hiring
As of this week, five new hire classes have started, with the first of those classes now scheduled for IOE.
Of the 650 job offers that Continental (L-CAL) has extended so far, 138 furloughed United (L- UAL) Pilots have accepted. This puts the acceptance ratio at approximately 1 out of 4.6. A slight increase in the total number of slots was necessary to compensate for resignations and to ensure proper scheduling in pairs for training, so there are now 44 slots remaining to be filled.
An additional fifty letters will go out in mid- December 2011. This will include all pilots who were in the L-UAL new-hire class of Mar 27, 2000 and the four most senior pilots in the April 3, 2000 class.
For planning purposes, an extrapolation of the 4.6 rate of acceptance mentioned above indicates that offers might reach some of the pilots who were hired at L-UAL in early June 2000. Please bear in mind that any pilots who originally bypassed and re-enter the process will continue to be accommodated with class date assignments as well. This will reduce the number of slots accordingly. L-CAL does not intend to schedule any pilots to begin training beyond the numbers mentioned above prior to Summer 2012.
United (L-UAL) Manpower
On the L-UAL side, vacancies were advertised with a March 2012 effective date (training planned in January, February, March) for:
2DEC2011
  
3 SFO 747-400 Captains 6 SFO A320 Captains 8 JFK 767 First Officers
The JFK 767 F/O vacancies were posted in anticipation of using JFK-based pilots to crew Trans-Atlantic flights originating out of EWR.Some of this flying was re-allocated to L-UAL 767-300 aircraft and has appeared in L-UAL lines at other bases since July of this year. The flying will be available for JFK-based pilots to bid in early 2012.
Manpower Planning awaits the return of approximately 35 pilots from various kinds of leaves during the first quarter of 2012, but has not announced a plan regarding recalls as of this writing.

That's a recipe for disaster, especially with AMR's chap 11 filing.
The pilots turning 65 had better schedule all need medical surgeries in their final months prior to hitting 65. I wouldn't want to rely on medicare.
