Heck, since I haven't turned a wheel on ANY airplane for going on 7 years (furlough/mil leave (non-flying)/furlough)...I'd appreciate a few new hires joining me. That way we can all be lost trying to find the sim building.

Pilotgolfer,
I bit my tongue on unitedflyers comment about "less qualified" candidates... But I guess if around 7000 hours, 3000 jet, and 2500 turbine pic is less qualified than the late 90's early 2000 hire with no pic time hired from the right seat of a Beech 1900 who happens to be a minority of some sort... I am guilty. CAL and UAL have both been guilty of the aforementioned "experience" hiring. I will bite my tongue again for a while.

Well that is not going to happen anymore. I expect there are more active UAL guys trying to get hired at FedEx these days rather than the other way around.
There are just not the numbers of military pilots around anymore and given the choice UAL seems to want to hire them first. Mil pilots choice I strongly doubt it will be UAL?

To me, the more interesting aspect will be the final acceptance rate; i.e. when the company gets to the bottom, works back up and there is no longer a bypass option. It seems logical that with people who have been out relatively longer and the bottom ~1000 on their second furlough, there might be more reluctance to leave what they have to come back to this wonderful place. Some will undoubtedly, but others will have a difficult decision. I'm sure we all know folks who have made a clean break. I wish everyone in that circumstance the best of luck with that decision.
There is no "works back up" on the CAL jobs. And, for the extent that the furlough mitigation agreement at UAL is effective (could be terminated in the JCBA whenever that occurs), there is no "work back up" there either.
Read the agreements.
As to a reluctance to return to either opportunity (should one surface at UAL at some time in the future), who could blame them?
I, too, wish everyone the best of luck whatever their decision when they are asked the question.

Your time machine needs a bit of an adjustment....
If you're talking about the UAL government mandated EEOC hiring for individuals that could provide a more diverse pilot group at UAL.....that endend about 95 or 96 I believe.
I know it was well done in 97 when I interviewed and was hired.
And, don't "blame" UAL for what happened with regards to the EEOC mandate. Nancy Stuke (God rest) hated what happened. The company actually got fragged by telling the gov't to shove it when they said UAL needed a more politically correct and diversified pilot group. And, then you got some 200 hour wonders in new-hire school because they fit the right metric to satisfy the gov't.
In the late 90's, my class was half military and half civilian (we didn't have any females, not that that really matters). Both groups were well qualified, had kicked butt on the Frasca (another story), and were well qualified.
We had guys from Delta, FedEx, etc. It was the place to be.
Now it isn't...hence my voluntary furlough because flying for UAL or any other legacy isn't my definition of being..........
My last sentence is the mind set you need to adopt. Don't get a chip because you think you're just as qualified as applicant X. If they didn't pick you, it is their loss...not yours.

No problem Lee,
I think chip has been knocked off for a few years, age has a tendency to do that. No, I was not referring to the eeoc mandated hiring, although I am aware it took place. I know a few regional pilots hhired in the late 90's early 2000 at UAL that were FOs with no PIC. On the other hand, everyone I knew as a new hire in 2007-2008 came from extensive military or civialian backgrounds w/ thousands of hours turbine/jet PIC. On the CAL side in 2007-2008 it was a different story... Many new hires were First Officers from the right seat of an Embraer jet with almost no experience. Many of them had been my First Officers at COEX. Some were excellent pilots, some you scratched your head and said what the.... The point I was simply making is when United hired last the new hires were very qualifiedwith a mix of military, civilian, and civilian ex pats who were getting back to the states. Many of my new hire class had 3 or more type ratings.
