Great system. NOT.
Or....you are on your to work, you think you have the jumpseat and then at the last minute a senior pilot bumps you for "personal use"... No system is perfect, but I agree with hockeypilot...confirmed jumpseat equals less stress.

We have an unwritten rule here in LAS on the LUAL side. Commuters list for the jumpseat so that we can see who else may show up and plan the commute accordingly. Preserves seniority and prevents most surprises at the gate.

Sorry, quick finger reservation for the jumpseat is BS and will never see the light of day at United.

An "unwritten rule in LAS"?...just on the LUAL side?....what could possibly go wrong for a commuter?
I have lived under both systems, and I would take the confirmed JS everyday of the week ("BS" or not)

You have lived under both systems, but it will never be adopted by the United pilots. It's not even being considered by either side. It's either "Pilot Senority" or DOH.
As far as what can go wrong with a commute. Simple, give yourself enough flights to get to work and if that fails we have a "Prudent Pilot Procedure".

I don't use the JS to commute. However, no way in hell will the UAL pilot group ever allow Mr. quick finger reservation policy, out of seniority -- not going to happen. Seniority, DOH, whatever -- will be the only policy you'll ever see, no matter how early you drag your butt to the airport.

But what constitutes "enough" flights to get to work if you cannot really count on the jumpseat? Like I said, I don't think any system is perfect and I am not suggesting you should change because ours is "best", I just like our current system better, having experienced both as a commuter...and I would also submit that the argument that 'It's all good' because we have an "unwritten agreement" at one base, on one side of the seniority list (LUAL), is nonsensical.

If you did, your view may be slightly less strident.

The last word describes your posts correctly.

Why are you in a United thread anyway??

should be first come first served and disputes settled by seniority.....the jumpseat is a **** poor commuting tool....bumpable positive space commuter status is better

Not sure why you quotes me here. I fully understand seniority and DOH. LCAL has your seniority number on the printout when you Re cleared for the J/S. Senority is what is used at BOTH airlines now as illustrated by my example of people hired on the same day showing for the J/S at the same time. The SENIOR pilot would get the seat. DOH is only used at LUAL because it is an easy way to determine Senority. Because of this mess of a merger, that is no-longer possible.
