I was here when that happened and you have no idea what you are implying. The issue wasn't just about manpower it was about cockpit workload and the need for another body.

The issue was resolved when, after several airlines had dropped the 3rd person in the guppy (and the DC-9 was being flown as a two pilot airplane), ALPA agreed to a study on the safety aspects of the third person in the more automated and simplified 737 cockpit of the day. The study agreed there was no reason for the additional person and that pilot was eliminated.

The really good news was the final decision was made in the early 80s and the airlines were already furloughing pilots due to a reduction of operations. It was a double whammy for those of us involved.

Yep Denver is about to have a seniority blood bath of epic proportions.

I agree with you on DEN getting a shake up but I think the 787 FO slots are what the company hoped for. Every 777 route out of IAH except HNL will be going to the 787 by March. The transition starts next month with GIG going to the 787-9. They are going to need quite a bit of staffing to cover GIG, AMS, FRA and NRT. I'd expect to see a decent 787 IAH CA bid soon.

As a person trying to get into DEN on the FO side...curious as to opinions for what DEN will do when this displacement is done. Prior to this there were 50-60+ more Captains than FOs on both the A320 and 737. Now it looks like 80+ on each. Will secondary displacements take care of this or will they finally have some 737 vacancies on the FO side?

Purely my personal opinion, but I'd be surprised if they added FOs. My gut tells me they would displace CA before growing the base. I'd love to see the opposite, but the current management can't seem to see outside of EWR and IAH.

I hope I'm wrong. DEN is beautiful and a wonderful base, but I think when SWA moved in, the writing was on the wall with our crack management team.

The Guppy moniker does not do it justice. The Whistling **** Box is much more accurate. And yes, I am currently flying it.

Not sure how that relates to giving away bigger airplanes and flying away... My line in the sand was 50 seats and no bigger, I really did not want to have the jets down there at all. Do you have a line? Or are all positions at mainline "737 flight engineer positions" to you that cannot be protected?
