Hello all,
I'm a 12th year regional capt, and I'm curious about Alaska Airlines, considering the hiring window just opened. I've never looked there before, as I've always lived in the midwest and considered the bases just too far away. However, I'd be willing to move to Oregon/Washington. Is SEA or PDX possible right out of training? From what I've heard Alaska seems like a good place to be, but I see a lot of grumblings here with regards to the relationship with mgmt, the contract and job security. Although, I see those same complaints just about everywhere on this site😁 Is the job worth a move across the country? Any info would be appreciated.

I don't think the move is worth it just based on lack of job security. AS has no scope, I don't mean weak scope, I mean nothing, zip, nada. That, paired with AS's evident struggle with the VX merger, continuous display of middle magament shuffling (both sides, bus and Boeing), recent announcements of growth cuts for the future and overall lack of leadership shown in the last few months kinda make it a no brainer.
Id stay away. AS as a stepping stone from regionals? Sure. But uproot your family and move over to the northwest for AS? Hell no.
Junior FOs that actually live in Seattle and Portland are bailing for any of the big 4/ FedEx/UPS (I personally know a few). There's your sign.
My 2 cents.

I was just filling out the application and ran into a problem. Page 2 of the application asks some VERY basic questions......can you legally work in the US......can you hold a class I physical etc. Very basic stuff. I answered all in a "positive" manner. When I hit the "next" button to go to page 3 I got a message saying I wasn't qualified for the job! WTF?
Now, the system will not let me back in to see what the problem might have been. Just gives me a message that I have already applied to the position.
Anybody else having an issue?

The only people who are happy here are the senior Koolaid rah-rah pilots who live in base. Everyone else I have talked to thinks this place is a huge pile. Let's see, you are going to move for a job that entails; horrible schedules (unless you are senior), ZERO flexibility with your schedule (line bidding), wacky vacation rules, NO SCOPE, seriously hostile management, less than industry stand pay, no growth plans... I could go on for an hour.
If you want the most evidence on why not to come here, find someone to give you our recent ALPA production about career progression. Don't be blinded by the pay numbers because once that new pay rate feeling wears off, you'll realize you made a huge mistake coming here. You are seriously settling for less if you decided to come to Alaska. Do yourself a favor and hang in there and wait for a real major airline.

If the crappy online application form doesn't tell you enough about this place, then I don't know what will.

Honestly, why would you sell yourself short. The grumblings on here aren't just a bunch of disgruntled pilots. This place blows, period. Alaska is NOT a good place to be, it's a major compromise with your career.

Most of us are not exaggerating when we keep saying that Alaska is nothing more than a regional. The BS propaganda E-Mails we get from the COO, VP of Flight Ops, & System CP remind me of exactly the BS we were fed when I was a regional pilot.

I would email them and ask. At least that would be another data point to show a problem with the app process.
