Plane makes emergency landing in St. Pete

Allegiant released the following statement on the incident:

"At Allegiant, the safety of our passengers and crew is always our number one priority. Flight 864 with scheduled service from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) to Hagerstown, Md. departed PIE at 4:28 p.m. local time. Approximately eight minutes into the flight, the crew reported smoke in the cabin and returned to PIE, landing safely at 4:52. Upon landing, the crew acted swiftly to deploy emergency slides for passengers to deplane as quickly and safely as possible. Passengers are receiving full refunds for the flight as well as $200 off vouchers. Hotel stay will be provided for passengers that do not reside in the area. We are currently working to reschedule the flight to tomorrow."

They claim to be all about safely, and the Captain acted in the safest manner possible, and yet was fired for the same actions.

There are places that would give him a direct entry Captain seat on an MD-80 right now.

Actions speak louder than words. Management lies. G4 management hates pilots and unions. This is the kind of support one can expect. The maintenance is enough to make even ValuJet management blush. Oh wait.

Captains are being routinely summoned to Vegas now for ‘suspect’ write-ups. Pure intimidation, old school ValuJet. Some habits never die. And imagine the prospects for this guy. A big black stain that is much more difficult to deal absent an arbitration process.

The system CP and HR simply told him that since the NTSB is now calling this an accident, the company basically feels it's best to terminate employment. Mind you, Crash/Fire/Rescue told the crew there was smoke coming from the airplane, which prompted the evacuation, but hey... I'm sure it was the summer heat and demanding schedule, right?
You like apples? How ya' like them apples?
Why are they calling it an "accident" if there was only smoke?

Did anyone who went get a call? I need to know whether to hate these guys because of how they treated me or whether to hate them for how they treated everyone.

It was called an accident because a single plaintiff's counsel is saying his client sustained a fracture.

Seeing as how they are interviewing 20 or so people in the next week or so, people got called. Aug 24 class will be full, it seems.

Nice precedent. Not that it has ever been different. G4 management making public statements that contradict practice. Safety is our number one priority until it cost money.
