How much does having internal recs help?

I have heard two things:

1. You won't get an interview without one?

2. It's a third party vender that selects applicants and AA only sees your app/recs once selected to interview?

Which is it?

LAX or ORD? Hard to predict. Current bottom guy is approx. 10000. Bottom ORD is 9600. LAX is 9000.

So you could think "I'm getting ORD quickly". But ORD has been stagnant and when the door shuts at stagnant bases the list can freeze for years. The huge unknown is will additional flying come into the base? That's always an opportunity to get into a base. Example - years ago BOS was super senior. Then it expanded and became junior during the expansion phase. The door shut and it became more senior as flying was reduced.

LAX? Senior. 777 is now the most senior bid status in the company. Starting AB flying in LAX opened the door for junior guys to bid in. Will it stay open? Or will 767D displacements to the AB prevent junior guys from bidding in?

And everyone sent to MIA/LGA doesn't want to stay there. Probably 2/3's want out. So they've got their bids in for ORD/DFW/LAX/DCA/BOS. Percentages would indicate that the majority are trying to get to LAX/ORD/DFW.

IMO? Without expansion every slot taken reduces the odds of the next guy to get the base. Where that line is, IMO, is almost impossible to predict. Six months ago no one expected DFW to be open to new hires. Last class had everyone sent to DFW. Probably a one time event due to Supp CC and STL reduction. We were surprised how quickly junior recallees got ORD.

Comment about 'base freezing for years' - Retirement bubble and some expansion should generate movement. How junior that movement will be is the huge unknown.

International? Newhires are occasionally getting 767I. Rumors of more newhires into the MIA 767I. MIA 737I is very junior and available.

If you want international and get a different bid status on day 2 you can put your bid in ANY bid status immediately. I think the current rule is company has a six month restriction(ie, they can't involuntarily move you within six months) but you can bid other seats/bases. Company can withhold you but worrying about that right now is getting way off into the weeds worrying about minutiae.

MIA international is the most diverse, and challenging, flying at AA. Challenging includes S.A. terrain flying and the reality of double all nighter flying.

Guys hired have stated they've had no internal recs. So the odds with no recs is not zero.

From what I've heard, second hand, an internal rec is not required.
I think as all three majors start hiring for retirements it's going to get a lot easier to get an interview. It will probably be a lot better than when I was hired at AWA a couple years after 9/11. I had several thousand 121 PIC, a four year, multiple internal recs, and it still took me 2 years of hounding and multiple airline job fairs to get an interview with American West-Freudian slip. Every guy/gal in my class had lots of PIC, 121 or military, and a four-year. Good look with your job hunting, in my opinion your timing is good.

I know for a fact that there is a 24 yr old from Express jet who just started class at AA, he has no 121 PIC.

That class is all MD80 as previously said.
Class size 25
15 Flowthroughs (824)
10 Street hires. 2 of the street hires were ex Eagle (non flow)

Oldest guy in class is a 63 year old flow through, who probably thought "what the hell, why not".

If you know it yet.

Lucky bugger. I'm going to take a wild guess and say he knew someone. The only case i've ever known of no PIC getting hired was pre 9/11 AWA and check airman's son post 9/11.
